"We had a configuration issue and it has now been corrected." That's Epic's response to Eurogamer when the news broke that both PS4 and Xbox One players of Fortnite we're happily co-existing in the same digital space. Fortnite reddit users noticed the strange variation in player names that could only mean one thing - a totally different console.

This comes on the heels of both Minecraft and Rocket League waiting on Sony to provide the green light for cross-play. With those titles Xbox One plays nice with both PC and Nintendo Switch versions. Rocket League developer, Psyonix has noted in the past that such a feature - that is enabling cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One - would only take a day to implement.

The fact that it happened almost by accident with Epic's Fortnite definitely adds weight to this whole thing being a case of platform holders building invisible walls. Invisible walls that sometimes are unaware that they're being breached.

Here's hoping that it's only a matter of time before the every platform cross-play dream becomes a reality.

It's unfortunately all on Sony. There's no real barrier beyond a yes or no from the top brass there. I spoke with Phil Spencer about this very topic and he told me, and has said on various occasions, they're just waiting for Sony to flick their switch. The fact a number of PS4 games use Azure servers as well makes the whole thing pretty archaic in the grand scheme of things, considering the ever-connected world we live in nowadays.
