After several months of speculation and teases, Doomfist finally joins the Overwatch line-up. Making his debut on the PTR today as the next Offense character, Doomfist comes equipped with a number of game-changing abilities. That naturally incorporate a rather large, powered-fist. And in a surprise move, as hinted at in the teaser from the other day, he's one of the leaders of Talon -- alongside Reaper.
To set the scene for the reveal Blizzard released the following origin story video for Doomfist in the style of Japanese animation. And... it's awesome.
Okay, so now Overwatch Anime is a thing. And this is so well done that you'll be torn between wanting the next Overwatch cinematic short to be done in this style, or, the equally awesome CG style that we've seen so far.
Anyway, back to Doomfist! Here's a brief rundown of his abilities.
Doomfist’s cybernetics make him a highly mobile, powerful frontline fighter. His primary attack is the Hand Cannon; this four-shot weapon fires projectiles from Doomfist’s knuckles one a time or in a single blast. With his secondary attack, Rocket Punch, he charges forward and delivers a devastating blow, knocking back any opponent it connects with and dealing extra damage if the enemy is hurled into a wall.
Seismic Slam smashes into a targeted area, knocking opponents toward him so he can deal further damage. His Rising Uppercut tosses enemies high into the air, while his passive ability, The Best Defense…, grants him shields every time he uses one of his abilities against an opponent. Lastly, his ultimate ability, Meteor Strike, causes him to leap high and drop into a targeted area, dealing massive amounts of damage.
Yeah, game changing stuff for sure. Based on the descriptions above it sounds like Doomfist plays unlike any other Offensive character in the game.
Doomfist is currently available to play on the Overwatch PTR, no word yet on when the character is expected to go live.
Oh, and in case you were wondering he isn't voiced by Terry Crews. As the character hails from Nigeria, he is voiced by the talented Sahr Ngaujah.
