And so today marks the end of an era, with Steam Greenlight being phased out in favour of a new service for indie developers called Steam Direct. As the lengthy post over at the Steam Community states, "As of now, we are no longer accepting new game or software submissions via Steam Greenlight and voting has been disabled. One week from today, on June 13th, we'll be turning on Steam Direct."

As regular Steam users we've come to know Steam Greenlight as the place indie developers could market their games to the community where if enough votes were obtained they would then become part of the Steam store proper. The service, which saw a number of releases go on to find huge audiences around the globe, also had its problems. With Valve continuously monitoring and updating how it all worked.

So then, how will Steam Direct work? Pretty simply actually.

A new developer will simply need to fill out some digital paperwork, including entering bank and tax information and going through a quick identity verification process. After completing the paperwork, the developer will be asked to pay a $100 recoupable fee for each game they wish to release on Steam. This fee is returned in the payment period after the game has sold $1,000.

And it sounds a lot easier to manage than Steam Greenlight.

A few game developers I know have talked very positively about this so I'm hoping it will be a much better system. I never really understood Greenlight (I am too casual now I guess). The only question I have is whether it will mean the Steam equivalent of a million fart apps popping up (and worse, people ripping off the games of others and republishing) as it lowers the bar dramatically to publish. But maybe that is dealt with as part of the submission process?
