And we have 1,000 keys to giveaway for each platform after the jump. For those that need a refresher, Paladins is the free-to-play team-based competitive shooter from Smite developer Hi-Rez Studios. That kind of looks like Overwatch. Still in beta on PC, Paladins has seen its audience grow into the millions since making its debut on Steam. And even though it still carries the 'beta' tag, has also seen its fair share of prize money given out at various esport events.

"Bringing Paladins to consoles has been a major goal for us since day one of development," said Todd Harris, Chief Operating Officer of Hi-Rez Studios. "There are very few free-to-play shooters on consoles, and we’re pleased to introduce a team based FPS with deep customization and progression unlike any other game in the genre."

The console version launches today with the Season 1 patch for the game, which includes 22 champions to plays as, three PvP modes, and more.

haha what a ripoff of Overwatch.

Someone explain why it's ok for Overwatch to rip off Team Fortress 2 but not ok for other games to rip off Overwatch.

Also... wasn't this game first made as a joke about how they ripped off TF2, then it got serious? Just something I heard...

Overwatch doesn't really rip off TF2 though, I don't think it has been legitimately accused of that for years now, that was just the kneejerk reaction to the initial reveal of it. It became pretty clear pretty quickly that while its certainly influenced by TF2, its very much its own thing.

Paladins seems much more blatant about it, with characters/classes that are pretty much copies of Overwatch heroes. Maybe it was just an unfortunate co-incidence on their part like they say, but its a bit too close for me to entirely believe that.

Escorting pay loads / carts
Capturing points
Having separate characters with different abilities in a team FPS

Correct me if I'm wrong, as I haven't researched this, but isn't that what made Team Fortress the original of those kinds of games?

If true, then I'd say Overwatch definitely stole those ideas. It's not even light inspiration... it's just a direct copy. Then they reskinned it and came up with different characters, gave them special abilities and said "look, a totally unique awesome original game by us!". They may not have said that, but that's how it comes across.

Whoever came up with it first, that's who Overwatch stole from. It's pretty much the entire premise of the game.

Thats casting a rather wide net though. Escort game modes, capture point game modes and different classes to select are hardly innovations unique to TF2. I mean Enemy Territory had classes with different abilities and escoring payloads as well and Battlefield 1942 was an fps with classes with different abilities and capturing points. It'd be mad to suggest TF2 ripped off either of those though. Those are just general gameplay mechanics you'd expect to show up in some form in most team-based/class-based/objective-based shooters.

When a game lifts not just the gameplay but the visual style and even the likenesses of some of the characters from another game though, then it starts feeling a bit dodgy.

I think we're going to disagree to no end on this one, especially because there are a lot of other similarities from too much TF2 inspiration. Thanks for attempting to answer the question though, appreciated.
