With the
recent announcement of Square Enix's partnership with Marvel Studios, and somewhat lackluster sales for last year's Deus Ex Mankind Divided, development on the next game in the series has been placed on hold. That is, according to a report over at
Eurogamer. The news comes as a bit of surprise to fans, mainly because Deus Ex Mankind Divided's story ended with many plot threads still open, pointing to an inevitable sequel.
Many of these story threads are said to have originally been part of Mankind Divided, but as that game's development stretched out to five years they had to be dropped in order to ship the game. Since its release Mankind Divided has received DLC story content, but they have been standalone affairs separate to the main plot. With the final bit of story DLC, called A Criminal Past, due in February.
As per the Marvel announcement Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal are helping out with the production of planned The Avengers game in addition to being reportedly in the early stages of leading development on a Guardians of the Galaxy title. In addition to the leaked image last year that points to the studio also working on the next Timb Raider game, called 'Shadows of the Tomb Raider', that doesn't leave much room for the next chapter in the Deus Ex story that started with 2011's Human Revolution.
