And how it was very much more in line with the scripted cinematic feel of something like Call of Duty as opposed to the studio's earlier efforts -- including the first two Doom games. All of this and more is revealed in a fascinating new crowdfunded documentary called DOOM Resurrected. Part One 'To Hell & Back' is online now and offers an intimate and insightful look at the long gap between DOOM 3 and 2016's DOOM.

Check it out. Its great, and you wont regret it. In fact there's a 99.99% chance you'll fire up DOOM once it's over.

One part, of many, that we found fascinating was how the the original Doom 4 took the more cinematic concepts that began with Doom 3, and pushed it into an Earth-bound post-apocalyptic direction. And how the team felt it was great, but got to the point where it just didn't feel like Doom anymore.

Part two of the documentary is expected to drop tomorrow.
