The world of Super Mario Bros. speed-runners is one that has existed for quite a while now, and dates back to the time when videogame speedruns were captured on VHS tape. Up until recently it was believed that a sub 4 minute 57 second speedrun of Super Mario Bros. was impossible, even though since 2013 the overall world record has been broken five times. And it's previous record holder Darbian who has broken the videogame equivalent of running a 100 metres in under 10 seconds, with a flawless performance and a new world record.

You can watch the video below, which also monitors Darbian's heart-rate. The speedrun starts of casual enough, and you could even confuse what's happening to a casual, yet skilled, play-through of the game. But in the closing moments not only does his heart-rate spike, but his concentration, leading to a celebratory moment when he breaks the record.

Check it out.

The heart rate monitor was a great little bit. Wonder how much $$$ he made from that.

Tweaking the refresh rate with modern technology to get ahead of the sprite collision reads with the frame buffer in the emulator on the computer enough to slide Mario past those tube shnappers isn't really the same as playing it in its original form
