Joining the studio back when it was still called Chaos Studios, Blizzard's Senior Vice President of story and franchise development has announced his retirement from the developer and the industry as a whole. This is pretty big news coming out of Blizzard, as Chris Metzen has been one of the key voices of the studio for quite a while now. Literally, as a lot of the lore and story we've enjoyed over the years in franchises like Warcraft and Starcraft came from the mind of this man.

Plus, he's been the voice of Orc hero Thrall for a number of years now. A true industry veteran and icon, Chris Metzen took to the community forums to make the announcement.

I had just turned twenty years old when I started working at Blizzard. Seems like a lifetime ago. Guess it was. Those first few years were the start of a very grand adventure for me, one that would take me around the world, introduce me to thousands of wonderful geeks just like me—and ultimately shape the course of my adult life.

Of course when I started, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I had no idea how to make games or build entertainment products.…

But I had an insatiable passion for ideas. For stories. For heroes.

I interviewed him at the last BlizzCon I went to and it was awesome. He's a really passionate and intense guy; intense in the hold he had on helping direct the lore and game-world/universes of one of the biggest development studios in the world. It's an interview I hold up alongside those I've done with the likes of Ken Levine, Shiggy, Inafune, Mikami etc...

Wow, what a career. I remember having his art on my computer's desktop for years. He is an amazing artist and storyteller whose influence will be sorely missed.

Lost a lot of the original Blizzard crew in recent years. They seem to be holding up alright still. Metzen definitely played a big part there over the years.
