As to the question of timing, it's anyone's guess as to why Team Fortress 2 is finally getting matchmaking and a new Competitive Mode as part of a new 'Meet Your Match' update. Perhaps it has something to do with another popular team-based shooter currently out. Well, whatever the reason may be, as per the overwatch overview the new Competitive Mode is a ranked 6v6 game mode featuring all Team Fortress classes, where player progression unlocks special titles and badges. And hats too probably.

The new Competitive Mode is currently only available to Premium owners of the game.
