In a surprising move, mainly because you'd think that any Star Wars fan project wouldn't get this sort of distribution deal, developer Frontline has secured a Steam release for its upcoming unofficial Star Wars Battlefront 3 project called Galaxy in Turmoil. As a free-to-play title.

You'd think that a cease and desist would be on its way from Disney. But according to Frontline head Tony Romanelli, Valve aren't all that concerned with any sort legal ramifications.

People have been expressed their concern as of late, saying they expect us to get a Cease & Desist from Disney. I’ll be honest – I’ve had mild concerns myself from time to time. However Valve clearly lacks that same concern. By agreeing to publish Galaxy in Turmoil, Valve is assisting us in growing and ensuring the longevity of the Galaxy in Turmoil project and community as a whole.

I encourage everyone, including those that doubt we’ll be able to pull this off, to take a page from Valve’s book. Take a deep breath and just take a chance on our project.

As you're all probably aware last year EA and DICE released Star Wars Battlefront, the new Star Wars meets Battlefield game from the developers who inspired the very first Star Wars Battlefront from all the way back in 2004. After a sequel in 2005, the series didn't really go on the back-burner as much as it kind of languished in development hell with a version of Star Wars Battlefront 3 cancelled in 2008 after being pretty much done.

With footage of the Free Radical developed third-game appearing online years after its cancellation, and a few fans out there not all that happy with the direction that EA and DICE took the series, Frontline took it upon themselves to create the Star Wars Battlefront game and sequel that they never got. And have been waiting for since 2008.

But based on the above teaser trailer, it's probably going to be another long wait. Because this barely qualifies as a prototype. Not to be mean, after all we'd like to see the final game get released, but it's probably too early to count on this getting finished before EA and DICE release their own Star War Battlefront follow-up in 2017.

How long will this be on Steam before Disney flag it for license issues?

2020 release then, that's pretty good.
