Blizzard have rolled out the latest patch for Diablo III, and if you're wondering if it brings anything new to the table, well... yes, yes it does. From overhauls to crafting, new sets and items, to a new adventure zone, and even upping the Torment difficulty levels, Diablo III 2.3 gives the aging ARPG another fresh coat of paint. And is available now for PC and console.

There's a lot that has been added in the new patch, so much so that the above video only really covers a few of the big changes. Perhaps the most exciting is the introduction of Kanai's Cube, a device that lets you extract passive effects from Legendary Items and simply equip them. Apparently you can equip up to three different passives.

New Feature: Kanai's Cube

Kanai's Cube is a new artisan that offers a slew of new recipes to fully customize your items and catalogue your Legendary powers. Several recipes are available to players immediately upon acquiring Kanai's Cube:

  • Extract Legendary Power: Destroy an item to add its Legendary power to your catalogue of collected powers. Once a power has been extracted, it can be equipped to your character without the need to equip the item. Players may have one Weapon, one Armor, and one Jewelry power equipped at a time. Players may only equip powers from items that their characters can normally equip and use.
  • Reforge a Legendary Item: Completely re-rolls a Legendary item as though it had dropped for the first time. This includes any powers that may have been previously enchanted on the item. Note that reforged items may re-roll as either Ancient or non-Ancient, so reforge at your own discretion!
  • Upgrade Rare Item: Upgrades the quality of a level 70 Rare item to Legendary. This item will roll as a randomized Legendary that shares that item's equipment type.
  • Convert Set Item: Converts a Set item to a randomized piece of gear from the same Set. For example, if you convert a pair of Asheara's Finders, you could get Asheara's Custodian, Asheara's Pace, or Asheara's Ward in return.
  • Remove Level Requirement: Removes the level requirement from an item, allowing it to be equipped by a character of any level.

To aquire Kanai's Cube, visit Zoltun Kulle in New Tristram, Hidden Camp, Bastion's Keep Stronghold, or The Survivor's Enclave in Adventure Mode. He'll be quite pleased to guide you on your way.

  • If you don't play Diablo that probably all sounds like gibberish, but it's definitely a game changer. As is giving Adventure Mode an actual purpose, by making the crafting items you need to work with Kanai's Cube only available via completing bounties.

Anyway, it's been a few months since I've played Diablo III but this patch definitely has me itching to give it another spin.

"The aging ARPG"?....vanilla is only three years old and RoS a little over a year with regular updates and patches. With rumours of a 2nd expac in the works, D3 is still very much a new, current, genre leading game.

Not a big deal, I just find your choice of words a little strange. Blizzards art design is so clever their games rarely age like others anyway.

You enraged the resident fanboi kosta, watch it bro.

The new area was a bit of a letdown, I plowed through it in about 10 minutes and grabbed the cube, now there's just another area for bounties. yay.
The cube itself is pretty cool though, and I guess they've given everyone a reason to start running bounties again with the mats needed for transmute only dropping from caches. tbh there isn't much in it apart from the cube and some quality of life changes.

Sorry Ice! hehe yeah well Diablo 3 is three years old lets face it.... Reapers was the reboot for the better (and i've pumped well over 400 hours into it so far) but I think it's finally showing it's age a bit... either we need news of an expansion or a major content update at this point..... either way i plan on spending considerable time with the cube and the latest patch...

Maybe "young ARPG" would work better?

I think an expansion around Covetous Shen would be awesome. Is he Greed? Is he a Nephalem? Does he just sell noodles and kidnap baby pandas?

There is a Shen short story you might enjoy Obes, they are not bad reads. No shortage of lore there for at least a couple more expansions.

WD shouldn't be lacking, the damage is basically there from your 5 closest fetishes which to me sounds better (used to hate having some of them shooting into walls etc)

Yeah I hadn't played with the cube, just tried it tonight for a few hours and it's so much better. Permanent voodoo from cubing SMK is a bit porn :)

I've not been on enough yet to try it properly but I am looking forward to testing out the cube for exactly that... want to change one of my passives from the spell cooldown to increased int with health globe and put the SMK buff onto my ancient DoD :D

I wasn't sure if you needed to hunt down a cube every time you wanted to use one or not. Used the one I found and was surprised to find it was permanent. Wasn't very hard to get.
