2K and Firaxis Games have announced a new addition to the long-running Sid Meier franchise in the form of Starships, a turn-based adventure-driven strategy game set in the same universe as Civilization: Beyond Earth.

Due for release in early 2015 as a digital download for Windows-based PC, Mac and iPad, Starships will have players command a fleet of starships before setting out to explore the galaxy, defend planets and their civilizations, while building a federation to usher in peace. “When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth,” says Sid Meier.

“What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars? What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth?"

Starships challenges players to create a federation through exploration, which will expand the federation’s influence, and in turn lead to further dominance throughout the galaxy. Players will also be able to research futuristic tech, and engage in turn-based tactical space battles complete with customisable spacecrafts.

Furthermore, every new playthrough features its own unique strategy map of 'dynamically' generated combat missions. Plus, if you already own Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth you’ll be able cross-connect the two games, although details of how they interact haven’t been revealed as of yet.

Trailer doesn't have any in game footage and its apparently due out in the next few months. I had to find a different version of the video to get sound but that is probably the uploader's fault

Listed as iOS only on the 2K website, so I am predicting a horrible tablet port to PC.

Like Beyond Earth I wonder if Take 2 Interactive will also force this to be $110 AUD on Steam?

I paid $66 for Beyond Earth and I still feel ripped off. At least it came with a free copy of CivV that I can gift to someone.

One of my worst Price : gametime ratios ever I think.

My own fault, I got caught on the hype train from some friends who are more into the series than me, I normally pick up Civ games on Steam Sales.

I regret buying BE as well. Played it for a couple hours and that was it.

I had a feeling it was going to be a fail-game so I waited until after release and BAM! Metacritic user score 55.. vs 81 for the critics.

How can the critics be so off base with their users to have such a disparity, even Ausgamers rated it at 88.

The best thing about Beyond Earth was when someone remixed the trailer to use The Final Countdown. It was all downhill after that.

F*****s should fix the piece of s*** game they released called BE instead of making another game. Ain't no way these guys are getting any more money from me.

I haven't even been assed to try the BE demo yet that I installed weeks ago, that's how s***** it looked to me before release.

All the civ games haven't really been worth purchasing until they have released a few expansions and not until they are on sale either. They tend to still be quite expensive for a long time after release which is pretty frustrating.

Actually even worse - Civ5's latest patch broke multiplayer. You can not save and reload any more. We tried to give it a go last week and no dice. Which is what caused us to buy Endless legend
