The age of the home console is over, that is according to Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun in a recent discussion with investors of the graphics hardware chip maker, where Jen-Hsun noted that the personal computer is becoming the most dominant gaming platform in the world.

"My sense is that the game console platform is not likely to enjoy the heydays when it was really unambiguously the only and the best game platform to enjoy games," CEO Jen-Hsun told investors (via WCCFtech).

"It’s just not true anymore. There are just too many other ways to enjoy games. Without any question is that the PC is continuing to expand the number of titles. Great titles are coming to the PC. It is continuing to grow and the quality of titles is growing up ever so fast."

"The PC has become the world’s largest game platform. [In] China [and] developing countries around the world, PC is a piece of platform they already own. They can upgrade it two, three, four times without having to change the basic platform. So the total of cost of ownership of a game PC is quite attractive."

The PC has become alot popular for gaming because of two reasons. 1st reason is that MOBA games are extremely popular now and can only be played on a computer, also they work great on Macs with a majority of teens and 20's have. 2nd is because PS4 and Xbox1 was already out of date before they were released. I guess that is where nintendo is actually winning by not competing against that.

Only an idiot would believe this. The average person doesn't want a PC gaming experience.

Well, that ignores the other PC black swans like World of Warcraft and The Sims.

I am staggered by how popular MOBAs are - I only play Dota 2 but I figured it was massively out of reach of the vast majority of the population because of the steep learning curve and the level of complexity. But I've watched the monthly player count go from half a million to something like 9m now. Amazing.

NVidia are only saying that because they're butt-hurt over not having rights to the X1/PS4. They probably just found out they lost rights to the X2/PS5

The guy is saying that he believes the average person WILL want a PC for their gaming experience, not necessarily currently, but in the not too distant future.

Steam OS is certainly going to help this situation.

Eh we have a pretty tight nit decent community on Xbox Live and Microsoft are quite happy with the Xbox division. We have seen a few consoles come and go over the years though. The Sega Megadrive for example. I play both PC and console but much prefer the console community even though the games are a bit more basic then some PC games.

This is not going to happen "in the not too distant future" unless your definition of that goes out beyond 10-15 years, and most likely a lot longer than that.

While there's no denying there is certainly a market for PC gaming, and a lot of enthusiasts who either stick with it or those - myself included - who in many cases would prefer a PC for most games - it's not universal, and there's plenty of people out there who just want a device without the pain of a keyboard and desk chair. Consoles aren't going anywhere for this or next generation, and come 2017-2018 sales of the PS5 aren't going to flop just because it's a console.

It just seems stupid to make the claim there there's ever going to "unambiguously" be a "best" platform to play games. It is a totally subjective experience; I've never enjoyed gaming on consoles ever - for me it's a no-brainer that the PC is the best and always has been. But I acknowledge that other people prefer console games for whatever reasons.

Just kind of reeks of Nvidia trying to pander to their core demo; like most marketing claims it is baseless and can be ignored

Well here's yer problem:

Microsoft once floated the idea of implementing cross-platform play between the PC and Xbox 360.
Microsoft found that even the best console gamers simply couldn’t compete with the accuracy of a mouse and keyboard afforded a PC player. “The console players got destroyed every time”,

BladeRunner - The upside is that you're on PC.

You don't have to download the MOBA's if you don't want to ;)

The only thing it will do is bring more market share to PC in the long run.

If only there were some kind of bus which allowed input devices that typically use basic serial communication such as keyboard and mice to be used universally.

I've never understood the allure of mouse and keyboard on a console though, I mean a large part of what differentiates the platforms (besides technical specs) is the form factor. If you're going to set yourself all up with a mouse and keyboard and a proper chair/desk to play it at, why are you even on a console at that point, why aren't you playing on PC?

pretty much how i read it lol

that would work out very nicely for nvidia if it were the case

2nd is because PS4 and Xbox1 was already out of date before they were released

that doesn't mean anything to anyone except PC only fanbois though

I guess that is where nintendo is actually winning by not competing against that.

how are microsoft and sony competing against it? there is a reason most games the days are made for console primarily and then get ported to PC

PC fanboys claim the dominance of PCs and console fanboys claim the dominance of consoles, and the world keeps turning. People have been making these proclamations and having these arguments for 15+ years now, and I'm sure will still be doing the same in 15 years time. So many sweeping statements have been made over the years proclaiming the death of PC gaming, then the resurgence of PC gaming, then the death again, etc, etc. I've just stopped paying attention.

Why people can't just enjoy games on their platform of choice and let others do the same baffles me. Does other people playing games on console directly affect how much fun you'll have gaming on PC? Does other people gaming on PC have any impact on the fun you can have playing on a console? Its so pointless even arguing it, you can't use arguments like "But on a technical level, the specs are better" to convince people to game on a PC instead of a console, because like pave said, the only people who give a s*** about things like that are PC evangelists in the first place. People are going to follow the games and follow the experiences they want to have to the platforms that are going to offer it to them.

For me the answer is simple. I have the best gaming PC money can buy plus all consoles of all generations oldest to latest.
I have a dedicated gaming room with a 3D projector, a 120" screen and a full blown cinema sound system. So yes I am a dedicated gamer and have been for the past 25 years plus an I.T. engineer. As you can see from my setup I can definitely tell the difference in graphics sound and overall quality. Well I used to love my PC but just grew tired of it for a simple reason. When I finally get my game time I DO NOT want to fiddle with installing drivers, with crashes, figuring out why it does nbot work as it should , millions of setup options etc.. i JUST want to play and relax.
Since the PS4 I never looked back just love it the controls are as precise as a mouse once you get used to it (I used to agree that nothing came close to the mouse) and I just switch it on and play. No crashes no setups no headaches, controls are always familiar. The final straw with the PC for me was WatchDogs I was really looking forward to it installed it and guess what on my hyper gaming pc it was like a slide show I threw the f.... out and bought it for PS4 same graphics same everything and NO hassle. You can argue all you want I've got it all and this is the reality of it.
I went through the same scenario when the PS1 came out it was just a relief and enjoyed the hell out of it. Don’t bash me for it, this is how a lot of people feel. Also don’t start on how WatchDogs can be fixed to run smooth as that is my point.

Cheers and happy gaming for all of us on any platform we love.

Doesn't seem that much of a surprise that a GPU manufacturer who managed not to secure their place in the console market would spout this kinda statement.

I think it shows a pretty fundamental lack of broader perspective really.

I can see this being a press release that may come back to bite nVidia in the rear when, inevitably, the next gen console tenders for GPU maker come about.

I wonder if this is bit of a hint at nvidia starting to get into a bit of financial trouble.

The tegra chips seem to have lost their popularity and their other mobile gaming attempts have been huge flops. They are still making great PC components but with AMD making a killing in the console market they are in a great position to under cut nvidia by even greater margins than they currently do if they want to get all throat cutty about it. What might even be making it worse is that developers are going to be optimizing games for AMD without any financial encouragement from AMD due to their console monopoly.

I hope they get their s*** together because AMD can be a bunch of lazy f*****s and without nvidia I think we could see a big stagnation in advancements in graphics.

Nvidia CEO is big troll.
But seriously, the number of console gamers who are stuck in the 1990s. So many of them don't realise a PC can be plugged into a TV, surround sound system and utilise both k/b, mouse and controller and hence played on the comfort of your couch
.
Then try discuss total cost of a PC vs console, these idiots add on the cost of the monitor.
But they neglect to mention the $2000 TV they are viewing the console games on.

This debate is never going to be argued by sensible people who will fair-dinkum compare apples to apples.
As others have said, just play what you want on whatever console you want. And know that consoles provide a great experience with 'lesser' equipment.
Basically its the standard rule of quality: you get what you pay for.

FSCB, please read my comment above. Just saying my pc cost 10x the price of the PS4 (rovides the same or even worse experience) and I won't touch it since quality games started to arrive this year for console. Yes mine is setup exactly as you described however with all the pain of regular PC issues. The comfort and relax levels are just in a whole different league. Also why would you want a big ass PC in your living room when you can have a sleek console and again just press ONE button and play EVERY time. I understand everyone's' point really but when I am at this level of gaming the reality just hit me. However I agree toward the end of the consoles useful life the PC will again take the lead but only by a small margin due to well optimized software for consoles. (only with upgraded pats though).

Bandy if you paid 10x the price of a ps4 you simply paid too much and are therefore a fool. My pc is 7 years old but it was a super computer back then when prices were higher for components than they're now.
I only paid 4x what a console of those days cost. Nowadays you can build a great pc for 2-3x the cost of a ps4.

Secondly if you are seriously telling me that you can't handle all the updates you are talking out of your arse not comparing apples to apples. I have an Xbox360 and PS3 and everytime I turn those on i have to update 20mins worth of patches. Then I put in a game that I haven't played in a while and again 30 mins of patching.
So the point is: if you don't use a system often of course you will have to patch it a lot on the odd occasion you turn it on. If you keep a pc up to date then it runs like a dream.

And there is no way clicking the accept button on your nvidia or windows update every few weeks is intellectually difficult!

srsly, you're getting old. We were discussing this in the other thread but on a slightly different issue. You've got little time and just want to sit down and play a game. That's fair enough, so dont buy a
hyper gaming machine" and then whinge like a f***** when it doesnt work.

What will happen in the future a move towards standardised machines similar to consoles., except a proper computer. They do exist now but in different forms. I think valve is working on this issue right now.

I dont understand why sony/microsoft/nintendo don't just release their own little computer case that looks like what the xbox/ps whatever is now, but it contains within, hardware architecture completely compatible with Windows/Linux whatever, and it can perform as a desktop PC, and the developers can all just design for one platform. Multi platform and exclusives is the ridiculousness of capitalism.
