World of Warcraft's next major update, Patch 6.0, is only days away. This patch will lay the groundwork for the new expansion pack Warlords of Draenor.

Blizzard says that Patch 6.0 will debut on Tuesday, October 14th (so Wednesday for us Australian folk). Players have been able to preload the files since last month. That will ensure that you can log right into the game on patch day - whenever the servers come back online, anyway.

Patch 6.0 features a new world event that leads into the plot of Warlords of Draenor. The Horde and Alliance will both find themselves under attack by a mysterious new force.

"The Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands has turned blood red," Blizzard says. "Hundreds of strange-looking orcs are violently pouring into Azeroth, killing everything that stands in their path. Nethergarde and Okril’lon have already fallen, and while the Horde and the Alliance moved as quickly as they could to get reinforcements to their people, they are too late. The Iron Horde invasion has begun."

"Word of this surprise attack sends players rushing to the Blasted Lands to reckon with the barbarous infiltration. After the fall of a high ranking Iron Horde general named Gar’mak Bladetwist, you’ll report what you’ve witnessed in the Blasted Lands to King Wrynn or Warchief Vol’jin. It’s apparent to both the Horde and the Alliance that this is only the first salvo in a much larger conflict, and the only way to win is to take the fight directly to the Iron journeying through the Dark Portal into Draenor."

You won't actually be able to travel to Draenor just yet, mind you. Those new zones won't be available until Warlords of Draenor is released. This event is just a tease to get you ready.

Players will also have a new dungeon to try out. Level 90 players will be able to journey into the remake of Upper Blackrock Spire and face three bosses. Upper Blackrock Spire will then return as a five-boss, level 100 dungeon in Warlords of Draenor.

The patch includes a whole array of new content that we would love to list in full here, but that would take up far too much space. Instead, head over the official patch notes to find all the juicy changes we can expect on Wednesday our time.
