You may have heard recently that GameArena is now officially closing down (including its game servers) next month. We decided then to give its former editor, Joab Gilroy, a chance to reflect on his old stomping grounds with a personal and heartfelt farewell.

Many of Australia's current games writers (including yours truly) had work run across Telstra's gaming domain, but Joaby manned its fort for the better part of five years, shaping its voice and tone, while delivering top video content and, of course, helping run its excellent game servers.

It's odd to think of it closing, to be honest. It was through GA I wound up on AG.

Pretty sad to see it go...

I don't know if we are supposed to be kissing Joaby's (mister 3/10) big toe or reminiscing about the amazing roller coaster ride that was game arena.

I am still recalling many fun things from those forums and it is in a way like the loss of a really good friend that you hung out with for what seems like a life time.
Joaby was pretty good value posting pics of his disgusting giant hamburger fetish amongst other things.

The on going war amongst the fly boys shiftymcpicky ,cheroca (a formidable character before his flying escapade) huey stand out and the last post that brought every one together was the "Plane on the treadmill" a comprehension of physics was not generally a strong point on game arena (ceiling propellers).

My dad and I played Urban Terror on the GA servers, I quickly outgrew the game but he hung around until it's popularity died. He would always tell me stories of his time on the servers and he really enjoyed every moment, this was in his early 40's. I remember the day he discovered you had server stats and ladders and he noticed he was in the top 10, he was over the f*****g moon. Then he cursed a name which would become his rival "Japanese Hentai School Girl".. I believe AusGamers/QGL peeps knew him as scuzzy (i'm pretty sure it was scuzzy, it was so long ago). JHSG knocked him off the ladder and my old man made it his mission to reclaim his spot.

I doubt Scuzzy knew of the rivalry that was going on in my house, and I know GA never knew how much my old man appreciated your servers and service and I doubt he would ever take the time to thank you. But on his behalf, Thanks. He loved playing on those servers and being part of that community, to this day he stills casually mentions what fun it was and I appreciated that he had this moment of gaming that enabled us to share an interest. His name was noxious and he has retired from video games.

GA servers were always first on my xfire lists, back when games had all of that public master list stuff. Around the BF2 time is probably reached its height of popularity.

Downloads were always fast, hardly any ads or f*****g around to get your hands on files.

I should've wrote for it more often. I have spent a lot of my online gaming life on GameArena servers. Sucks to see them go.

I rarely get to exercise my 'told you so' punitive urges, so allow me to offer a particularly loud I F*****G TOLD YOU SO to all those lovely GameArena commenters who flamed me for daring to suggest in an opinion piece that Aliens: Colonial Marines might not have the right number of Gearbox employees working on it so it might not come out with AAA polish. Yeah.

Great write-up! Some real friends and life-changing adventures came about thanks to the discovery of the BF1942 forums. Also many great threads to be had in General, and great people.

End of an era :(

Played 1000s of hrs of bf2 on GA3 karkand inf, GA8 dally and allmaps. Never saw a single admin in all that time but the freedom to play without fear of being banned by some butthurt admin and the anarchy and lols that followed (especially when the negscore broke) was worth the odd hacker.

Also many great threads to be had in General, and great people.

Yeah some good times in General.

Bluedogpcs brain damage. Pirrelloman threatening to bring the full might of the AFP down on GA for cyberbullying.

Bieltanman, SweatyGremlins

Space updates from l3p3r, where is that guy?

About time they put the GA front page out of it's misery, don't know why they kept it to repost articles from other sites after they closed the forums.

It's a shame to see the servers go though. Their bf2 servers were some of the best that I have played on. Hell, that's why I joined the forum in the first place. And yeah, I do miss all the funny s*** that took place in the general forum. Gamearena will hold a spot in my heart for that.

Speaking about the forums, I think it's exactly a year since they closed now, isn't it? Should play battlefield 2 or something else on the weekend to catch up and whatnot.

The guy with the dolls and mental problems, oh and two toy guitars. Epic fred.
At last the master plan for GA by the good folk at Telstra has come to fruition.

He has empathy for women. While that exists, he'll always be a virgin.

Trufax, Kreese was very, very good at Quake. Which was a surprise because he seemed like a bonafide scrublord.
