Id Software's free-to-play arena FPS Quake Live has launched itself onto
Steam today, bringing its '90s-styled twitch gameplay to an expanded audience.
Based on the popular Quake 3 Arena, Quake Live originally premiered in 2010, and currently features over a dozen gameplay modes across 100 featured deathmatch levels. The core game is free for all players, while subscribers receive access to a broad selection of Create Match options and clan features.
The system requirements are light, as you'd expect of a four-year-old shooter that was once a browser game. They are as follows:
Minimum:
OS: Windows 7 or later
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Processor or better
Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX or better, ATI Radeon 8500 or better, Intel i915 chipset or better 1024x600 resolution
DirectX: Version 9.0
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Hard Drive: 1 GB available space
Sound Card: Stereo Soundcard
Recommended:
OS: Windows 7 or later
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Quad Core Processor or better
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 7 Series or better, ATI Radeon X1800 series or better 1920x1080 resolution
DirectX: Version 9.0
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Hard Drive: 2 GB available space
Sound Card: Stereo Soundcard
You can find the
game available now through Steam, and a trailer for the release below.

Getting a "Premium" account appears to be a waste of time, as I haven't seen any premium servers around since the update.
The "Pro" accounts get to create servers, and those can be premium, but Pro accounts can just invite all accounts in anyway.
In other words, you don't need to pay, just rely on the Pro accounts for now, add them as friends.
See how long it takes for public Premium servers to come back up.

Where can I read up on this? I didn't see anything in the changelog, or nothing so clear anyway.

SLI, baby!
Prior to all that I had a Diamond something or other (before Hardware accel), anyway it was the end of the software rendered game and Hardly Normal was stocking games with the Graphics Accelerator enabled type stuff.
I hacked the Open GL subset apart and enabled it and me and my bro were like, purtty. :)

Guvna, It can't really be played on LAN without great difficulty (basically need idsoftware to co-host the server). The community has held LAN events though and had about 30+ people turn up.
Most Australian and New Zealanders are on http://www.4seasonsgaming.com. There are video guides on playing duels, ctf, team deathmatch etc. There are also low skilled level (players above a certain rank can't play) duel competitions that get played too.
It's still pretty active for what is a really old game.
Here is a highlight reel from the community submitting frags etc.
