Virtual reality looks to be coming to the typical consumer far quicker than expected, with TechRadar reporting that we could see the consumer model of VR headset Oculus Rift sometime in 2015.

According to TechRader, the Oculus Rift will follow the way of Google Glass, offering a 'public beta' intended to gauge consumer and retail reaction prior to a full-blown launch. Pricing is still undecided, however Oculus VR co-founder Nate Mitchell spoke to Eurogamer earlier this month saying that the aim was for the consumer version to be "as cheap as possible", in the range of $200-400.

He explained that a commercial headset would need to be significantly smaller and lighter than the current dev kit, and be "super-polished and easy to use by anyone". Of course, there is also the form of competition now with VR now being developed by Samsung (though in coordination with Oculus), Sony and possibly Valve as well.

Oculus Rift recently launched its Dev Kit v2, complete with infrared motion tracking and an independent camera.

I think they're doin it right. If it came out without any support from devs and games didn't have any support for it, then it'd end up on the shelf collecting dust really quickly, and the whole Oculus thing would fade out of memory. There needs to be days of gameplay right out of the box on day one. Assetto has an Oculus mode built in now too.

Hoping the consumer kit comes out with the note 4 screen, giving a higher resolution than DK2.

Hoping to get into it when and where it would be appropriate to use. It would be weird turning the mouse separately to my head and one keeps moving in the same direction. I've no idea how its going to function.

i'd expect there be an option to turn this off for FPS games etc.

So you aim a gun with your head? That would suck.

no aim your gun with mouse still, however you have the option of using your head to move your view separate to your gun.

I think in Star Citizen people are using Rift/track IR to aim their guns whilst using hands to control the ship (with mouse/keyboard/joystick/whatever).
