Depression Quest, the interactive text adventure game from independent developer Zoe Quinn, has now been made available for free on Steam.

Its Steam release comes at an important time, given the very recent and sad death of the late Robin Williams, who had suffered from depression. Developer Zoe Quinn was initially unsure whether to go ahead with Depression Quest's Steam release, given its content, but decided that it might help other depression sufferers.

"I feel like I have a responsibility to those who could be helped," said Quinn, writing on her blog. "So I am launching the game. Quietly. I will not be promoting it until a respectful time later. But I want it to be out there and available in all the ways I can make it be available so that if someone needs it, they have it. After agonizing over it and asking the general public, they’ve overwhelmingly responded with pleas to release it. Especially among depression sufferers."

If you or anyone you know is suffering from depression, contact Beyond Blue or call 1300 22 4636 for help on the subject.
