Dead Island 2 will be moving away from its original Dead Island four-player co-op to a more Journey-like drop-in eight-player mode, developer Yager Development revealed in an interview with
GameTrailers.
Players choosing to jump into the eight-player multiplayer will find that you won't be able to kill each other, instead the goal is to compete for resources. These include concepts such as "treats," whereby a helicopter will fly in and drop a special package that players will have to race to grab. "We didn't want to make a competitive game where it's about killing other players and racking up a kill count, because that's not Dead Island," game director Bernd Diemer said. "It's mostly about having fun and playing with other people."
Those wanting to play alone will still be able to do so confirms Diemer. However, "as you're connected and you're willing to play with other people, they will join your world, your server.".
Dead Island 2 will be launching sometime during 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Check out the E3 2014 CGI trailer below.
