Planets³, the 3D open-world voxel-based RPG from indie developer Cubical Drift, has successfully surpassed its Kickstarter goal, meaning it is now officially a thing. The project was able to garner support of US$310,708, which isn't much considering past Kickstarter projects, but that extra US$60,000 will be well worth it.

Described as a combination of the "excitement of role playing with the pleasure of construction and the boundless freedom to roam about in a 3D universe," Cubical Drift are hoping to offering the game first on PC. A number of other features are also touted on the Kickstarter page, including dungeon exploration, various ways to take on enemies in combat, splintered biome development and a rather in-depth crafting system.

It's quite hard to full explain what Planets³ offers over the many other voxel-based RPG's pushing their way to the market without going into far greater detail, but suffice to say it isn't just the cool name and cubed worlds that it has going. Planets³ won't just be offering your standard voxel sandbox, instead going for a rather more elaborate "explore space" take on the genre that should hopefully offer some quite vast and expansive adventures.

An alpha is scheduled to launch sometime during Spring for us Australian folk, with a public beta sometime around Winter the following year. The full release isn't expected until sometime in 2017, although the team will be releasing the first part called Planets³: Race to Space sometime during 2015.
