The original Dead Space -- Visceral Games' acclaimed sci-fi action horror title -- can be acquired free of charge today from EA's Origin store as the publisher kicks off what appears to be a new ongoing promotion on the PC games distribution platform they're calling "On the House".

A promotional page on Origin promises that there's no ulterior motives (unless you count harvesting new Origin registrations and email address), just a free game available for a limited time:
Free?! What's the catch?

There's no catch. Grab full games, expansions and more at absolutely no cost. Just make sure to act fast because On the House specials can appear and disappear at any time.

You mean a trial or demo, right?

Nope. You’re getting a full version of the real game — for free!

How long will I own the game?

Once you’ve claimed your game, it’s yours to keep!

Why is Origin doing this?

We're gamers, too. We appreciate you making Origin your gaming home ... and besides, who doesn't like free stuff?
Dead Space has previously been offered for as little as a dollar back when EA participated in the popular Humble Bundle promotion, but hey, free is free. Head over to Origin and pick it up with the offer lasts.

"What's the catch?"

It's a clunky game using mouse and keyboard, plus the games that come after aren't as good so it gets you into the world only to let you down.

I wouldn't install Origin even if they gave me the full catalog for free. Keep your free stuff EA.

Because we have steam, and steam holds so much. Origin is a piece of bloat that I don't want running on my PC just to access EA's and only EA's games. Plus EA.

Also did I mention origin is EA and EA have been all kinds of s*** over the last couple of years.

origin is just plain s***. I tried to install a game that used it, it told me I must first install origin so it started the installer, the origin installer crashed.

my origin account was part of the russian hackers debacle. Lost my entire account along with CC info. Took months to get it back. Once I did, I deactivated it and never used anything to do with origin or EA again.

How they handled that was a joke.

.....this.

What the hell is wrong with the rest of you? It's a really good game, it's free and all you have to do is install a piece of s*** software. I remember having to do that all the time back in the day, f*** I remember having to install Java or the latest DX or even worse I install a game and then have to update my vid card drivers but because I was too cheap I couldnt afford a good video card so this one is actually discontinued and I have to troll the internet in hopes of finding a solution.

F*** all of you and your high and mighty "I'm not supporting EA" stance. They're giving you a free game, ITS FREE. Half of you are saying what you are saying because you have already played it. The other have a legitimate reason (russian hackers).
