You might consider the tower defense foundation of Plants vs Zombies, removed and replaced with third-person shooter mechanics, a slight against the IP and the genre. And you'd be right to also just assume the whole thing, as is represented in Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare, microtransactions included, one giant cash-in.
But it never means that a game can't still be fun, even if you can buy stuff to help you in-game, as long as it's not required
