Canadian Studio Digital Extremes is celebrating its 20th birthday, a very impressive milestone considering they have remained independent since the early 1990s. It's a feat matched by very few others as most studios of that era either succumbed to economic pressures or were tempted into acquisition by major publishers. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Epic Games, Stardock, Frogwares and Rebellion that are older, though I'm no doubt forgetting some other UK stalwarts).

Over the years Digital Extremes has played important co-development roles of games like Unreal and Unreal Tournament, BioShock and Homefront, have proved their worth individually with the likes of The Darkness 2 and are still going strong, having found recent success in its cooperative-focused free-to-play multiplayer shooter Warframe, now on both PC and PlayStation 4.

Reminiscing on two decades since the launch of Epic Pinball, the developer has published this 26 minute long behind-the-scenes featurette where the team discuss many of the games and key moments of their history, with appearances from some of their long-time industry friends, including John Romero, Cliff Blezinski, and Epic Games' Mark Rein and Tim Sweeny.

Happy Birthday DE, and here's to another twenty years.
