This year's VGX Awards (formerly known as the SpikeTV VGAs) saw a huge number of 'world premiers' amidst the ceremony of the likes of "Best Song in a Game" or "Best Character" (GTA V won Overall Game of the Year, mind).
While many see the awards as a bit silly given some of the categories over the years, the event has become somewhat of a stage for the year ahead and major announcements, and while there were more trailers and reveals this year than in previous ones, there wasn't a lot in the way of new IP. Rather, most of what was shown was just updated, new trailers for new content from games we already know are coming in 2014.
Unfortunately trailers are all still bound by Viacom exclusivity, so the only place you can currently watch them is on GameTrailers and its rather clunky steaming video player. We'll hopefully have youtube links or locally hosted videos available in the next day or so, but until then, you'll just have to suffer GT's unskipable ads low bitrate clips.
Two big surprises to emerge though, both involve everyone's favourite adventure series devs, Telltale, who it was announced is working on a Game of Thrones episodic game series, but perhaps most exciting of all is that they've teamed up with 2K Games and Gearbox Software to deliver a series borne from Borderlands simply called Tales from the Borderlands.

A next-gen Definitive Edition for Tomb Raider was also confirmed, which will not only include a number of graphical upgrades, but also new content. The re-release of the game will be in January of 2014.

Nintendo confirmed Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for Wii U coming in February of next year. They also confirmed that this entry in the long-running series would bring back fan-favourite, Cranky Kong.

Elijah Wood revealed his casting in Double Fine's Kickstarter success, Broken Age. He joins an already-impressive line-up that includes Wil Wheaton, Jennifer Hale, Pendleton Ward and Jack Black.

Alongside new gameplay footage of Quantum Break, the Xbox One exclusive from Remedy (Alan Wake), the studio also revealed a new iOS "reverse tower defense" strategy title called Agents of the Storm they boast hasn't been done on the platform yet. Quantum Break

Ubisoft showed off a tech demo video for their new Snowdrop game engine that will be used in Tom Clancy's The Division, highlighting its high level of detail, procedural damage, volumetric lighting, particle effects and more.

A UK-based indie studio, Hello Games (Joe Danger), made up of just four team-members revealed No Man's Sky, a procedural sci-fi first-person adventure game with huge amounts of exploration across multiple planets with real-time space-travel. The game's visuals take on a colourful, almost cel-shaded look and the ships are clearly tapping into classic Star Wars design.

Finally, Respawn revealed a new Titan class for the hotly anticipated Titanfall, called The Ogre. The class is obviously from the Heavy category, and looks to be slow and powerful. Vince Zampella of Respawn also said they're thinking about a beta for the game.

There were also new trailers shown for the likes of The Witcher 3, Destiny, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Thief: Deadly Shadows and Dying Light:

Joel Mchale rocked up, realised what a classic low budget crap event it was and decided to just rip into everything and everyone.
Often he would open his mouth and either be interrupted or the camera would move off him.
Mean while outside where the GTA concert was setting up they decided to chuck Tyler the Creator and a black comedy group.
This resulted in some very cringe worthy moments as they would often cut to them to set up the next segment, this group either got very drunk or stopped caring as the show went forward.
Train Wreck television at it's best.
Classic Joel Mchale Moments,
Constantly referring to his co-hosts excessive layers of clothing.
Challenging his co-host to pick his favorite game
When Indi Dev from No Mans Sky was being interviewed, asking him how he and his team didn't have carpal tunnel syndrome.
Asking Reggie from Nintendo what he thought about the PS4 and Xbox.
Constantly asking guests demoing games if they were on drugs when coming up with ideas (luckily guests like Tim Schafer knew how to play along).
Oh it got even better when Matt Stone and Trey Parker came out around the midway point to announced game of the year... yes this show was such a cluster f*** they announced game of the year at the mid way point.
Matt and Trey made a pisstake out of it, claiming that movies and tv shows were dead and that video game awards were the future. It was presented awkwardly with zero f**** given.

No Man's Sky looks phenomenal, I'm really hoping they can capitalise on their promises and offer an expansive world that I can just get lost in like Starbound or Minecraft. It seems like 2014 is going to be the year of open-world explorative games and I can't wait for that.
