Valve has today announced that their favourable PC-gaming centric Steam service has surpassed a whopping 65 million users worldwide since its launch way back in 2003. The announcement sees the service offering over 3,000 games on its platform for PC, with an account growth of 30 percent in the trailing 12-month period and the platform holder looking to take over the living room next year.

Valve is planning to launch its newly announced Steam Machines later in the year. Combined with the open-source Linux SteamOS and its very unique Steam Controller, which combines a touchscreen and no analog sticks, the publisher and developer is hoping to disrupt the marketplace.

"The main goal of Steam has always been to increase the quality of the user's experience by reducing the distance between content creators and their audience," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "As the platform grows, our job is to adapt to the changing needs of both the development and user communities. In the coming year, we plan to make perhaps our most significant collaborations with both communities through the Steam Dev Days and the Steam Machines beta."

cant believe its been that long.

You could say I was an early adopter with a pretty early steam ID of

STEAM_0:0:132

:)
so pretty sure that is the 132'nd person every to get one?

(I original ran a server and registered the steam account for running a server back in the days)

I still remember how much bitter bitter hate there was for steam when it first came out, much akin to origin now.

However I don't think in 10 years Origin will be anything like steam has become today.

I lost my first steam account. God knows when it was, wasn't too long after steam launched I think. I just made a new one when I actually pre-ordered HL2 gold as it came with all the games tied to my original steam account (half life and cs) so I wasn't really missing anything except being an early early adopter. Who actually knew it'd become this huge though. Still, 9 years on my account ain't bad.

I remember I held off getting steam because you only needed it for official mods and I was over CS at the time. Natural Selection only required regular WON auth.

YI was still pretty heavily into CS at the time having jumped on around version 1.3, IIRC Steam was when 1.6 was released, and while I still played I was a much happier 1.5 player.

and tended to play lest from 1.6 on.
