You've been eagerly waiting for it since we announced our plans earlier this month, and now we are proud to reveal that AusGamers Server Rentals has gone live! This exciting new addition to AusGamers is being released just in time to provide the highest quality servers for Battlefield 4.

You will be happy to know we have Australia's most experienced game server team, and everyone that works here is a hardcore gamer, so we understand what you want from your dedicated servers. When we go home at night we'll be playing on the servers you rent from us, so they have to be the best servers in Australia.

Because AusGamers has always been about our love for Australian gamers, we are offering Battlefield 4 servers for $1 per slot. Not "from" $1 per slot - there are no extras for "debranding", no charges for public or private, just the lowest price we can do for every server. Highest quality, lowest price, most experienced and most humble: what's not to love?

So to recap because we just know how excited you are, AusGamers Server Rentals are now officially live, with Battlefield 4 on offer as the first game supported. We plan on adding support for more games and services over the coming weeks, with Battlefield 3, Ventrilo and TeamSpeak support being added on Monday 28th October. If you happen to have a game in mind just drop us a line using our contact page and we'll try our best to get it supported.

Feel free to ask any questions in the comments below, we strive on giving back feedback as quick as possible. Also keep an eye out for "Malthius", who is our newest member on the AusGamers team, who will be handling all your server rental questions.

Definitely going to get a TS or Vent server. For 25cents a slot I'd be crazy not to!

Might get a MC server over summer.

I'm interested in Mumble at some point for my FFIV crew, we are using some random mumble at the moment!

We weren't able to get paypal sorted properly before the BF4 launch, but its our highest priority for the service. Other cool payment things are next on the list after that.

If peeps are interested in Mumble, we'll enable it - we were using mumble servers for testing the service (no license fees = win).

Minecraft can't be done per slot, but we'll be competitive.

Minecraft would be good, are you going to do blocks of 512mb? and got ETA for rental?

That will be just our price in general for slot-appropriate games. As Malthius said, we'll try to be as competitive as possible for MInecraft because we know how much you guys love it.

Secure, handy for clans or communities that pay to one account and want to set up an easy subscription.

You have $1 per slot literally on top of the minecraft dude's head!

Get back to me when you have pricing for it (and you really need to fix that graphic its 100% misleading if you are not going to offer $1 per slot Minecraft servers).

Yeah you need to fix it. I thought it was $1 per slot. Misleading to the max. I had told a few of my friends it was $1 per slot so you should fix it asap to make it clear that the slot pricing is for games that support it. Definitely remove the minecraft image from that imagine too.

Hogfather: I queried it, but our designer assured me that was the correct spot for the image. I wanted the $1 per slot image right on top of the BF3 dude's head. She said that everyone would understand that it was a general idea and not a guarantee. I now get to laugh at her.

Nobody does Minecraft per slot...

Anyone who feels deceived, let me know and I'll do something credity when we open up Minecraft. Just because I love everyone, and I'm too tired to consider how bad an idea that is.

imminentsoldier: Our very good friends at Mammoth Networks (http://www.mammoth.net.au/) provided our payment systems, and they don't take paypal. We haven't had time to properly test paypal integration, so it isn't live, but we'll do it as soon as we can. It won't be next week though.

I have the server config docs in my hands at the moment. I'll get Eorl to upload them to AusGamers tomorrow morning, and there will be a link to them in our BF4 configuration guide that I'll be writing tomorrow.

I'll update this thread when those things are done.

syk3: Yeah, I'll be writing up the very basic docs tomorrow morning, then filling them in over the rest of the weekend. I only got the docs from DICE this morning, and assuming nothing more breaks with the rentals launch, I'm about to start some fairly significant drinking.

Of course, drunken documentation writing is always hilarious to read in the morning, so you never know... ;)

Better off putting a slot game there then, like CSGO or something.

Don't worry, we'll try to be as competitive as possible when it comes to the more intensive games like Minecraft, ArmA 3 and DayZ Standalone (if and when that ever shows its zombie face) but $1 slot just isn't feasible for such games.

So, just out of curiosity here now Eorl, when you replied to me 'sure is Hogfather' did you not read my post properly or just not know what you were talking about yet?

OK onto a more serious note. Are these services hosted on the same infrastructure as Mammoth's VPS?

Now I love you guys, but we've had issues with network there due to DDOS and I'm a little:

A- scared of what happens to my business hosting if its on gaming server infrastructure. We're already offline semi-regularly because of DDOS, and this will ONLY get worse when the kids start to fight because they got banned from l33tc@tz's serva.
B- this is a lesser worry but even if its on a different system altogether, how will you deal with DDOS given that it causes outages on your other platforms.

Is there a wider plan to have better network redundancy that I'm unaware of despite my enquiries?

NO.

Longer answer:

No, Mammoth VPS is entirely separate - not even in the same building, let alone the same datacentre. We'd never do that for all the reasons you mention. The systems are entirely separate and an attack on one will have no effect on the other.

Might be worth moving the Mammoth VPS stuff to where the gaming servers are if they are so reliable.

Edit: The same thing Hog mentions affected/affects me on a business level too.

Game servers are a huge DDOS target, which is why most mid range VPS providers prohibit running game servers on their service.

Kinda related: When will the Ausgamers servers for BF4 be up? The American release is about Tuesday night our time and the Aussie release is Thursday. I plan on using a VPN to unlock Tuesday night and was wondering if any local servers would be up... otherwise single player mode for a bit.

Our plan is to have them up on Monday afternoon our time, giving everyone 24 hours to test before the worldwide release. We are going to bill from the Australian release date, just to be kind to those who don't unlock via VPN etc, but we don't want to leave you without servers to play on.

I will get my clan leader to host his s*** here.

As soon as the server rental hosts stop DDOSing each other everything will be better for Battlefield.

It's hard to protect a game server from ddos. It can't be split into multiple datacentres (think Cloudflare) and even if one day it could, you'll get ingame netsplits as you may remember back in the IRC days on big servers. You typically only need a gigabit of bandwidth and you can break most endpoints on the net. In the realm of the people who facilitate these attacks, a gigabit is pocket change.

The speed of domestic internet is rising way faster than the speed of backbone equipment and typically this problem begins with infested computers found at home. It's certainly going to get worse before it gets better.

I suppose a small 'overall' mitigation would be to have some type of "Server Admin Code of Conduct". While they have the right to ban who they like (as they should of course), if they're found to be doing it for unwarranted reasons, and their server as a result becomes the target of attacks, their service will be forfeit and the target IP closed.

We used to see people making threads about the admins of same 2 to 3 servers on the GA forums. As a host I'd flag them as a possible liability for the network and investigate further, but yeah - each person has their own opinion of what an admin should be able to do. - However once it becomes a problem for the overall service quality, something should be done for the remaining admins who don't abuse the system.
