Minecraft's world is about to get rocked to its cubic cores with the pre-release of the long-awaited Update 1.7 now available and the official launch coming by the end of this week. Titled "the update that changed the world”, the name is definitely describing exactly what it will be like after the update.

From doubling the amount of biomes available to the world generator, changing the rules around terrain generation, and overhauling certain code in preparation for a plugin API, this new update is going to feel like a whole new Minecraft. Of course it isn't just biomes that are getting tweaked, with new blocks being introduced (stained glass!), fishing re-done, achievement overhaul, multiplayer enhancements and more.

Check out a snippet of the changelog below but head over to Mojang's blog for the full notes.
New world generation!
  • Double the amount of biomes, with new trees/flowers/blocks.
  • New “Amplified” world option.
  • Less ocean, more awesome.
  • New blocks!
    Two new types of wood.
  • Stained glass! With both blocks and panes.
  • Packed ice, red sand, podzol.
  • Lots of new flowers, including double-tall versions of current plants.
  • Portals can be bigger sizes!
  • Fishing!
  • Added more type of fish.
  • Redone the fishing mechanics. Can now catch junk and treasure too.
  • Fishing rod enchantments!

A clanny and I made an automated cart station in vanilla. It took a few weeks on and off to time all the triggers. Completely scalable as each section can be copies with World Edit and you can paste more sections as needed.

While there are simpler solutions than ours on YouTube, I found copying others designs was only fun until you worked the core of the design out, then it's pretty bland. Making your own is not only a challenge, but you feel pretty good when you've spent a long time making something work, and it finally works. So much trial and error.

I also once made a 3D maze out of oak leaves. Multiple levels, some ladders, lots of spots where you must remember which choice you made or start again. I wonder if anyone has a maze server with maze by maze progression? I'd tap that.

Would have been handy to include a Link to the Mojang Blog over the "Mojang's blog for the full notes" text.

And somehow, the snippet doesn't really sell me on a hugely updated Minecraft. Apart from the biomes, the rest of it sounds like more fluff.

Minecraft didn't hit Alpha until June 2010. 2009 was Minecraft Classic and indev.

Your are right, I meant Classic. That'll teach me for talking on the phone to a customer while posting on a forum.

Yeah, that list sounds like a minor patch, though the title is enough to probably to get people to look into minecraft again and possibly get addicted again, so maybe that's a conniving mojang-marketing ploy...

    Thank f***.

Of all the minecraft games ive played, ive only once made it to finding the end portal and filling it about 1/4 of the way with ender eye things. Really should beat the end dragon one day.

I wouldn't consider re-doing the terraforming code, decreasing ocean spawning, increasing biome spawning, adding several new blocks in, adding additional multiplayer chat commands, changing texture packs to be resource packs which includes custom sounds and of course the usual tweaking to get mod API ready.
