Independent game development studio Red Barrels has today announced that their spooky horror title Outlast is now available on Steam for $19.99.
Outlast follows investigative journalist Miles Upshur as he explores Mount Massive Asylum with his trusty night-vision camera, hoping to break the story of his life. But his story – and his life – is quickly put in danger as he discovers a mystery that walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely…
If horror is your kind of genre then check out the launch trailer below which eagerly reminds us that just about anything is scary in an abandoned asylum.

“Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language,” said Game Designer and Red Barrels Co-founder Philippe Morin. “Please enjoy!”

eorl, your 'on steam' link is broken in the op.

True Survival Horror Experience: You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide

hrmm.. that sounds like it'd just be annoying. i like to stomp my monsters.

Cheers Demon, should be fixed now. Its actually really engrossing not being able to just turn and shoot an enemy, really makes the atmosphere more spooky. Be prepared though, you will be scared.

I don't envy you if you have to review it. I played for 20 minutes earlier and I'm trying to work up the nerve to progress. Far more intense than Amnesia imo.

Scariest game ever was AvP (2000). When it first came out there were no save games. Made it extra tense watching the blips on the motion detector hearing those xenomorphs screeching in the darkness.

I'm interested in grabbing it, but does it have an interesting story going on or is it just about the scare factor with freaky music and dudes popping out from behind corners?
A vid I watched this morning seemed pretty cool, but I don't like putting myself through that s*** unless the plot is ace :P

Will check this out. Tried some of that free to play 'Cry of Fear' and its pretty f*****g freaky despite the dodgy graphics. Gotta finish amnesia some time as well.

Yeah pretty interesting plot. Basically an investigative journalist who got a tip off from a whistleblower that creepy stuff was happening in this abandoned asylum and so you go to check it out and of course things go haywire.

Just started playing this tonight @ 9.30pm. Windy outside. Lights out, headphones on.

Survived the first scare as i wasnt looking at it
But then the second scare came as i opened a door, and f*** did i yell. Neighbours probably heard me.

...And thats enough for tonight.

I just don't see how people can enjoy scaring themselves in this way. Is it the same sort of adrenaline rush you get on rollercoaster? Women always want to watch scary movies with me, I say yes because it means a higher chance of giggidy, but god I don't enjoy the movie at all...

I was wondering about that recently Tyoson.

I find most rides pretty meh. Speed, acceleration, g forces n all that s*** during a ride makes them good to go on but certainly not on the edge of your seat terrifying like certain movies or games.

As for the games/movies. Cant tell you why i enjoy them so much. I do find games much more intense than movies. Probably back 5-10years ago the movies were scarier but the more i watch, the more i get used to s*** and know what to expect. I also think the POV of games makes them much more engaging and draws you in more so than movies.

Also, i read a brief study snippet a while ago that watching somewhat scary movies (more like a thriller than an all out horror) increases that chances of women being horny afterwards compared to say comedy/action etc. So yes, good news for you.
