Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft Beta Key Competition

Thanks to Blizzard Entertainment, AusGamers has 10 of the hotly sought after closed beta keys for Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, the upcoming free-to-play strategy card game. Ordinarily we’d just ask you to write a token 25 words or less for a chance to win one, but these ones are special so you’re going to have to work a bit harder for it.

If you would like to be in the running to win one of these, currently very exclusive, beta keys, you’ll have to get creative with an image editor, and photoshop us up a Warcraft-themed greeting card (see what we did there?) and post it in the comments below --it could be for a birthday, wedding, fathers day or bahmitzmah… whatever, as long as it’s Warcraftified. We'll keep the competition open for a week so everyone has a chance to show us what they’ve got. Winners will be chosen based on entertainment value as judged by your esteemed AusGamers admins, and will be notified by personal forum message.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

1. Submitting a design does not guarantee you entry into the beta phase of Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft -- only 10 entries will be selected, as judged by AusGamers admins.

2. All submissions must be under the size of 700px high by 1000px wide and must not contain nudity, illegal content or overtly offensive material.

3. All submissions must be themed around Blizzard's "Warcraft" franchise.

4. No duplicate entries or more than one entry from any participant.

4. Entries close 27/08/2013 at 9AM AEST

The entire point of fan sites getting beta keys is to help attract new viewers/users to their websites and to help promote the game. However, if the rules did change I'd suggest sending out a tweet to clarify this so you don't have a lot of potential new users wasting thier time (some people will put in hours with this contest). Many sites have seperate competitions for new users/already existing users.

Just my 2 cents to help avoid some dissapointed people. For new people entering I'd wait for clarification, at least if you're planning on putting a lot of work into a submission.

The thing is that 99.9% of the people will just either google search something, whip something up quickly in paint or not even read the rules and post twaddle, then never come back to the forum except to check if they won. I'd honestly be surprised if any of the 1 posters ever make another after the comp ends.

Also, I don't think the rules have changed, they just said they'd "take it into consideration when judging". I'm guessing that would mean if they had to choose between two similar-in-hilarity entries, they'd give it to the person who is already a part of the community, rather than a googler.

You don't have to worry about post counts or who has been here the longest, everyone will be judged on the quality of their entry first and foremost.

I already have, but it's kind of still annoying that leeches are showing up from google and spoiling the chances.

The keys were meant for the community of ausgamers, not people who googled it and will vanish when the comp is over.

It's like playing footy with a club (for fun) for years and then some guy plays one game with you and wins player of the year with a 6 pack and a small cash prize.

It's not tears worthy, it's just sorta annoying.

Man, this is a complete clusterf*** of a competition you guys have here.

Most of the pictures posted so far are straight from google images with either none or very little modification and are probably some kind copyright violation since people are taking credit for the work which I don't think is allowed under fair use.

You are going to have to not only judge the best images but then make sure they are actually the work of the entrant which seems like a huge pain in the ass.

Should have stuck to "in 25 words" competitions.

I've seen like 5 images that were just stolen off google and altered in paint (if that) lol.

Pretty sure using the actual models themselves for stuff like competitions / machinima is fair use. Or at the very least, if it's not covered, blizz don't enforce it.

I certainly don't envy you all that googlin'.

Atleast the google by image should make life a little easier for the judges.

Also, last entry. Again, rather rough, but I've only got paint.net. I wanted to green up the babies and do a smoother chop, but yeah...

Also, it's a pubes-width over 700px despite resizing the image on photobucket and re-linking. For some reason, it just doesn't want to imbed in anything other than 738x738. So yeah, if it's really that big a deal, I can re-size the bugger again and MAKE it work.

Just curious, is this a "regulars first served, first posters considered after" type competition or is Ausgamers about to get DDoSed from desperate first time posters who googled "hearthstone key" lol.

There be a requirement of 500 posts and no less than 2 years as an ausgamers member. Thats just my opinion though

Man this comp is easy, All I have to do is find random warcraft images on google then use MS paint to put a few words on it. Bam! instant beta key. lulz.

If it was just a giveaway sure, but this is being determined by the quality of the entry, and theres some pretty awesome entries from first time posters. The one that lovish posted above is great! Cool art style, and accurate enough that I can even recognise some of the bits of gear the characters are wearing :p

Also, rideable murlocs needs to be a thing RIGHT NOW. Get on it blizzard.

Also, I've been playing Hearthstone a bit over the weekend, and it is indeed quite fun. A lot more fun than I was expecting. So worth putting the effort into your entry for a key! I don't imagine stock images from google with some text pasted on will cut it at the end of the day (not that I'm judging or anything, so who knows, maybe the judges like that kind of thing).

Well at this rate, there are only a few that I would consider good enough to win a key (aka ones that took more effort than adding text in MS Paint) and another huge number that are posting actual CARDS and not GREETING cards.

So at this rate, some MS Paint texters may well end up winning by default lol.
