Building on a
WSJ report from earlier this year that online mega-retailer Amazon was working on a set-top media box, the rumour mill is now suggesting that videogames will have a prominent role on the potential platform, with
game informer reporting that an Amazon Android console with a dedicated controller is said to be launching in time for Black Friday 2013, the US Thanksgiving sales in late November.
According to those we spoke with who have knowledge of the in-development hardware, Amazon will be leveraging the titles already available on its platform. Each day, the company offers one productivity or game app for free and stocks a healthy library for its own devices, like the Kindle Fire. The console will also have its own, dedicated controller.
No official confirmations have been made -- with Amazon tooting the "does not comment on rumors or speculation" line -- however, the rumour has since been corroborated by several other publications, including
TechCrunch, whose sources suggest that the device will be powered by a Qualcomm MPQ chip from the Snapdragon line of processors.
Amazon has found success with the own self-contained Android App store on its Kindle Fire tablet devices, so if it's looking to expand that ecosystem onto televisions, it makes sense to try and better accommodate gaming over that transition.
