The life of a Caribbean pirate is the main theme for the upcoming Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, but the historical tale will still be wrapped within the overarching sci-fi narrative that the series has been built upon, and over the weekend, Ubisoft developers spilled some details on the game's modern setting.

A developer blog over at chronicles an assortment of tweets made by Lead Writer Darby McDevitt, as well as a few screenshots from the game's present-day levels, reiterating that the games primary character will be "you", as an employee of media conglomerate Absergo Entertainment.

McDevitt refrains from spoiling anything about the fate of Desmond Miles, the character controlled by players in the first several games, but does suggest that we will be learning at least some new things about what happened after the events at the end of Assassin's Creed 3. Here are a few of the more revealing Q&A's
@matman_1990 what country or location will the present day be set in & which characters will be in the present day?

Lovely Montreal, Quebec, actually… featuring a host of new characters, and a few old ones.

@MSUNREAL51 so what you’re saying is that we have the choice to work as an assassin or a Templar?

Neither. You work as you. Most people at Abstergo Entertainment are not Templars. But it is owned by Templars.

‏@KamalElgamel13 will the new character have a relation to Desmond?

No, Abstergo’s tech has improved. They have genetic memory cloud servers that allow anyone to dive into another’s memories.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is due on October 31st 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U, with PC to follow in November, and PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions also in production.
