BioWare has announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic will be going free-to-play next week according to a recent update on the MMO's official website, stating that the option will become available alongside the release of Game Update 1.5.
Today we are excited to announce that the global launch date of the Star Wars: The Old Republic Free-to-Play option will be November 15, 2012. This release will be simultaneous across all of the territories and countries The Old Republic is available.

If you’re a paying Subscriber at the launch of the Free-to-Play option on November 15th, you will be granted all of the Complimentary Cartel Coins currently listed on your Cartel Coin Ledger page, plus a one-time grant of 250 Complimentary Cartel Coins!
Players looking at joining the ranks of the Star Wars MMO can check out a full run down of what to expect in the free-to-play system, including mentions of restrictions to those playing for free over here. The most significant restriction seems to be that a slower exp gain will be made to those on the new system, however everyone will be able to access all level 1-50 content including each storyline.

A new devolper diary has also been released, detailing what players can expect from the MMO's 'Cartel Store', a marketplace that players can purchase various items from with the new in-game currency being added in Game Update 1.5. CHeck out the video below for more details.

On a related note, there was some mention that anybody who was a subscriber before June is eligible for the in game paid currency depending on their previous months active, but only if they have an active sub when free to play comes around.

Don't think so, I was subbed for about 5 months after release, checked my account page and I have 5 months worth of cartel coins available
Posted 06:40pm 09/11/12
Yeah, you get coins based on how many months you were subbed, but then you get bonus coins on top of that if you're subbed when it goes free to play

I'm guessing these cartel coins are purchasable with real money and f2p users will be disadvantaged without buying those?
Posted 07:06pm 09/11/12
Yup, but f2p are getting disadvantaged enough without needing to buy cartel coins.. limited instance runs, arenas, etc per week. They're trying real hard stay as far away from f2p as possible by the looks of things.

i received an email yesterday giving me those coins.

The whole story is unlocked on f2p, but things like bank/cargo storage are limited or disabled. I think that if you've ever subscribed, or spend more than $5, you get elevated to semi premium membership, or something. I've spent a grand total of $15 in buying the game, and possibly a second month, I can't remember, so don't know if I'd get the semi premium level...

In other news dishonored arrived today and I have no time for any of this s***, and don't know why I'm wasting time reading up on it. :P

I'd recommend playing the F2P for the story, was extremely well done. Otherwise nothing else of real interest compared to Guild Wars 2 or WoW.

Just let it die.
