EA has announced that those wishing to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the Battlefield series, players can grab a free copy of Battlefield 1942 off the
EA Origin store.
Battlefield is celebrating its 10th Anniversary. Now available on Origin as a digital download for the first time, experience Battlefield 1942, the game that started it all.
Relive the greatest war in history in Battlefield 1942. Experience the heat of battle as you heroically storm the beaches of Normandy, drive a tank across the deserts of northern Africa or pilot a fighter plane during the Battle of Midway. Choose your weapon and then jump into an all-out, raging firefight. From bazookas to battleships, a massive arsenal is at your command. Prepare to face the enemy in the air, in the deep and on the battlefield!
Karl Magnus Troedsson, Vice President and General Manager of DICE, has a message to all of our fans:
“Since the beginning, the reception to the Battlefield series has been incredible thanks to our amazing fans. Every day, we strive to provide our community with great games and new ways to play as evident with Battlefield 3 Premium. We wanted to thank our fans who have supported us throughout the years with a chance to go back and play the game that started it all.”
For those who own the original box copy, sadly you will not be able to play on the "newer" servers, as those with digital copies are separated according
to the FAQ. However for those eager enough that are stuck on the disc-only servers, simply grabbing the
digital copy will solve that issue.
Battlefield 1942 was originally released in 2002, and the series has since been developed over more than 10 different Battlefield titles, including the most recent Battlefield 3.

edit: man, "buying" from Origin sure is a pain in the ass compared to Steam

"Q: Can I play online against players who have the original disc-based version?
A: Unfortunately, no. This Origin digital download version can only be played against other players who are using the same version. But since it’s free for everyone, everyone can download their own copy of the game. This version of the game will only show applicable (new) servers in the server browser."

^ that didn't work for me. If someone figures out how to get it running with custom resolutions let me know.

Worth pointing out that it doesn't affects the menus though.
