John Carmack delivered his keynote talk yesterday at QuakeCon 2012 - as usual it is full of fascinating insights into what he and the id Software team have been doing. The speech kicks off with an apology to the PC community for the issues with RAGE, calling it an "inexcusable error" on their part and saying that it was "really really poorly handled, offering some explanation into why it all happened the way it did.

There's a lot of stuff in there about the virtual reality stuff he's been working on - and I'm sure a huge range of other topics, but the full video goes for over three and a half hours - so settle in for a long haul before you hit the play button below!

Maybe they hyped rage too much or something but i paid no attention to the hype/previews and played it not knowing what to expect. 7/10 and worth it in my books if you are a fan of FPS. Bring on the new doom, cant wait.

Obviously never played q3

I played lots of q3 (and q2 and q1). id software lost me half -way through Doom 3, I dont think I have played another game of theirs since - broad consensus seems to be I'm not missing out on anything.

I was trolling a bit, but realistically id are no better at making games than any of the dozens of mid-tier developers. The only reason any of us even know the name ' id' from a bar of soap is from games made 10-20 years ago; and for me at least the benefit of the doubt they earned from that worn away entirely.

Anyone hoping for a good id software game is in the same boat imo as those waiting for a new sonic game worth playing.

Google. Im @ work so my help is limited but i know there are a number of easy fixes to increase resolution, bump up visual quality, stop dead enemies from disappearing.

I lost so many hours to q3 playing against bots and on our home LAN with my brother. Fun times. UT had better mods though.

If you are looking at Doom 3 then you may want to look at this. Pretty awesome set of mods which really boost the graphic quality and other things. Also tells you how to set widescreen and such.

Talk all you want about wether the games id are making are games you want to play, or not .. but john carmack is a modern day genius and he is pushing games and game technology in all the right ways .. I've watched the first two hours and he starts to speak about the really interesting (i think) work he has been doing on VR head sets at about the one hour point and isn't finished at the 2 hour point.

Can't wait to finish it up tomorrow ... Looking very seriously at getting in on the kickstarter for the Oculus.

Rage was alright. However it wasn't good enough to spend the time investment playing it for me. Maybe if I had less to do with my life i'd finish. Some games while fine if they don't grab you right away. They just take up too much time with out achieving anything. See Far Cry 2 for reference.

Rage had some of the best AI i've seen in awhile. I remember playing on hard and the dudes actually out-playing me from changing cover, dodging my shots as if they were anticipating where I was aiming and quickly changing momentum mid-run and giving me a nightmare in crowded areas.

The changing cover was pretty good however the dodge/duck/weave tactic while charging im not convinced on. It obviously added difficulty but i assume it was something like 'if targetted, then 50% chance to dodge/duck/weave a maximum of once every 5 seconds' and to me felt kind of cheap - as if the AI had a 6th sense and were able to tell exactly when i had placed my crosshairs on them. I would much rather had the AI dodge/duck/weave even if they werent being targetted to add realism. Still a good AI mechanism however i think it could have been better.

id have been primarily about game technology. Doom and Quake where great games at the time chiefly because they were among the first of their kind, also they were pretty good in their own right as it was.

Carmack has earned the right to babble about game development until he dies imo.

rage was great fun imo. the driving parts where pretty crap & the vehicular combat was lame... but the ai was fierce & punished camping. the muties were awesome how they would leap around. i especially liked how they would defeat the typical gamer ploy of standing back & putting the crosshair over a doorway to wait for the ai to come through :)

also it had ziplines! lol

What game were you guys playing? I put Rage on nightmare and it encouraged camping and did not pose a challenge due to it being so easy to camp it up.

Sit back with fat mammas or fat boys and use the scope on the pistol, or just snipe them. Get out the dynamite bolts and fire them behind the enemies, especially enforcers, and they all turn their backs on you because they perceive the threat to then be behind them, giving you an easy shot with the next dynamite bolt.

Is this presentation for real? Over 3.5 hours?!

I was gonna try to post that requested summary of what's talked about where, but 10 minutes editing lock ain't gonna make that very feasible on a 3 hour video :(

As much as I think Carmack and id are almost irrelevant, he earns a tiny bit of respect for apologizing about rage.

He earns respect for being one of the worlds best programmers, he loses respect for being one of the worst decision makers for games :D

Yeah, id would be better if they stuck to making game engines and Carmack stuck to developing new protocols, methodologies and optimizations.
Best would be they found some uber-important project and stuck him on. Seriously, NASA, give him some contractor funding and a team of great people to work with.

I'd have more respect for him if he had released the level editor for rage like he promised but No. Rage was bad (that's being nice) on PC and he's done nothing to fix it. That lame apology at the begin was just that.
he can release all his old has been games on the new engine till the cows come home but he is just another BullSH#T artist console sell out now....... which is pretty funny coming from someone who claims the cutting edge as his domain.
when he perfects VR he should look around and realise what a POS PC dev he has become.

he still looks like a primary school kid thou lucky kent.
