NCSoft and ArenaNet have today announced that their upcoming next-gen MMO Guild Wars 2 will finally be released this August, a date many players have eagerly been awaiting. The news also comes with an additional notice that the final weekend beta will also be held later in July, a much anticipated date for any person that has pre-ordered.
Building on sales of more than 7 million units of the original game, Guild Wars 2 redefines massively multiplayer online roleplaying games with visceral, action-orientated combat; a gorgeous, living world full of constantly evolving dynamic events; customisable personal storylines that are unique to each player; intense Player vs. Player combat between small teams or massive armies; and most importantly, a shared online world where players work together as allies instead of as rivals — all with no monthly subscription fee.
“We’re offering gamers an experience that delivers on the promise of online gaming with a truly social experience in an immense, shared world ,” said Mike O’Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet. “After five years of creation, development, and polish, announcing the launch date of Guild Wars 2 is a huge milestone for us, but the thing we’re most looking forward to is seeing gamers from all over the globe explore this world and begin creating their own stories.”
Set for a release date of August 28th, ArenaNet will focus on polishing Guild Wars 2 to ensure the highest quality experience on launch day, which includes hosting a final Beta Weekend Event from 20th to the 22nd of July.
Details about the upcoming beta weekend can be found on the
official website, plus your chance to pre-order a digital copy from their store. Check out the trailer below which gives you a taste of just what to expect from Guild Wars 2, including what seems to be a very large dragon verse airships.

Didn't think it would be out until October or November. Today is a good day.

I like this analogy but would like to add that a close friend told you that she was a bomb in the sack as well.

Same here, I know it seems great and all and I still want it but I'm hardly enthused. Prob has to do with the cash shop, they just always rub me the wrong way, even though theirs is pretty mild.

I'm quite pumped for Guild Wars 2, and have been for a few years now since enjoying Guild Wars. What people need to remember (and often don't) is that no MMO will ever beat WoW, it just isn't possible. Why would people give up their high level geared characters to start a fresh? That is what I think ArenaNet have taken on board the most, and so have created a world full to the brim with new and exciting features that won't necessarily say "stay here", but more so allow players to enjoy what the developers want to create.
Guild Wars 2 offers a lot of different stuff, and from the weekend betas I've played I couldn't stop, it was just too much fun. It felt more like a online Skyrim with no real set path, and being able to go anywhere in the huge world is just unreal. Put in some amazing PVP that out classes WoW's and you've got a great free MMO.
Also, the cash shop is barely a worry for me, especially when I can get all the items by swapping in-game gold earned for gems, the shops currency. Any item that I have seen in the shop is purely aesthetic, or a temporary boost to XP/Guild XP that in the long run doesn't really matter when Guild Wars is never about gear but more so skill.
