InXile founder and Wasteland 2 lead Brian Fargo has confirmed that the Kickstarter-funded tactical RPG will be built on Unity, the game engine oft-lauded by game dev educators for it's generously-featured free-license version.

Broadcasting on Twitter Fargo explained "I can officially announce that we've chosen the Unity engine for Wasteland 2. It meets all the criteria we need. First screens looking good.". News site Gamespy jumped to the conclusion that Unity's proficiency for browser-based games indicated that Wasteland 2 might be going that direction, but were quickly reassured by Fargo that the game will be a traditional executable file.

Notable Unity powered games include browser games Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, Iron Grip: Marauders, PlayStation 3 game Rochard and upcoming self-described "AAA Indie" game Interstellar Marines.

Been playing with Unity a bit myself lately, it does seem quite awesome, and the paid version has pretty much all the features you'd need in a game engine to make a triple-A game (and a license is cheap too, like $1000 a seat)

Heh, yeah, I installed the basic version of Unity and was just overwhelmed with how customisable and involved it was. It's quite usable, but definitely not dumbed down to be noob friendly. It seems perfectly positioned for the srs business that InXile are doing.

Good to see them going with Unity. I've used it for two different projects at uni at it really is a great engine. Simple but with more than enough features and power for most games. This should also mean more money that can go towards other aspects.
