The term "Hard Sci-fi" carries a lot of dorky stigma, but Minecraft creator and Mojang Specifications founder Markus "Notch" Persson is one developer that doesn't need to concern himself with mainstream appeal. Following up the moderately amusing MARS Effect April fools gag, Notch has now confirmed that Mojang's next game will actually be a space-faring affair, and that the feature set listed on the joke site was actually a reasonably accurate summary of their actual intentions.

With a name as niche as the genre, 0×10c (Notch still won't share it's intended pronunciation) appears to be an extremely hardcore space sim, set in the year 281 474 976 712 644 AD, where players control ships with 80s style computer hardware via intense micromanagement to explore the galaxies, perform deep-space mining operations and do... well we don't really know what else.

Here's the hopeful feature list from the official site:
  • Hard science fiction.
  • Lots of engineering.
  • Fully working computer system.
  • Space battles against the AI or other players.
  • Abandoned ships full of loot.
  • Duct tape!
  • Seamlessly landing on planets.
  • Advanced economy system.
  • Random encounters.
  • Mining, trading, and looting.
  • Single and multi player connected via the multiverse.
A release window or intended launch platforms are yet to be revealed.

No, that's another Mojang team.

And I meant next as in, the next game they have announced. Not necessarily the next that they will launch.

Notch loves his 'computer inside a computer' style games for sure

It's probably something silly like it's the latin letter for C which is the western version of the greek gamma and this being the third game... So it's code name is Gamma.

Isn't it just how fast the speed of light is?

Edit - Google seems to say it's "0 × 10 * the speed of light = 0 m / s".

It's an interesting concept, but it's waaaay to early to get excited about this...

Also, the 'X' games managed to do 'open-ended' sci-fi space exploration quite well... it didn't make them great games tho.

0x10 is hex notation, not zero multiplied by 10. Considering the story is some nonsense about a little endian and big endian mixup in the programming of the stasis pods, it makes sense it'd be hex notation. Still a bit of a daft name though, but I guess people will buy it anyway cos hes the Minecraft guy

i really hope the worlds you land on are able similar to the minecraft worlds and that mining is similar (except with drilling equipment attached to the ship would be cool)
