It seems Age of Empires has no boundaries, with recent news that the Free-to-Play game has made its way over to Steam and is available now to play. The latest in the long-running Age of Empires franchise, Age of Empires Online allows players to play as some of the greatest ancient civilisations including the Greeks, Egyptians, Persians, and Celts.
As players grow their empires and look for new adventures, Age of Empires Online delivers the opportunity to buy new Premium Content Packs – everything from entirely new civilizations to Booster Packs with new game modes and more. It’s the biggest Age of Empires game ever.

What’s more, Age of Empires Online adds new social interaction, customization, and MMORPG gameplay in an evolving and persistent world. Play co-operatively or competitively, craft and trade items, and level up by completing quests – all for free! Plus, Age of Empires Online still offers all the classic RTS gameplay, empowering players to build mighty empires, manage resources, earn rewards, and battle their way into rich new worlds full of lively villagers, epic warriors, and historically-themed architecture.
While some may scoff at the more cartoon cel-shaded style art, overall it seems to be quite a fun game, and at the very least a well-shaped free-to-play title. Also to celebrate coming to Steam, all Civilisation and Booster Packs are 50%, which offers a range of new content.

Check out the Steam store page for more info, as well as our game page which has all the latest screenshots and trailers for your viewing.

I was playing the beta for some time, really liked it and thought the art style was really cool. I'm going to jump back in, out of the new C&C and Stronghold versions of this free to play/energy/time game style this one is the best

Yeah this was definitely superior to the other free to play games, though the A.I. is either very stupid or turned way down on the difficulty scales (perhaps for server reasons), because I played a ton of games (and still had made very little progress into actually unlocking anything in game beyond the second or third age), and the A.I. still seemed to be in tutorial mode. The only challenge were the start of "enemy attack wave" maps, getting some towers up.

Yeah in the beta the AI was pretty stupid, but hopefully they've ramped it up, I remember good ol' Age of Empires 2 when I had a match with AI and they boxed me in with walls, was totally sad faced. Definitely will be playing this though.

I don't think it was in beta when I gave it a spin, wasn't too long ago either way. The tutorial may just be verrrry long, because I had an ally AI at one stage who seemed to behave a lot... more betterly.

I'll jump back into it.

I played the Beta a reasonable amount... my only concern is how long it took just to unlock the 'co-op' game mode... (I never actually played a 'co-op' map coz my bro didn't get that far into the game...)

I see all the DLC is bundled @ ~$17AUD on steam atm which is a pretty good price (especially when compared to GFWL's prices (or the over-inflated cost of 'MS points')) tho it sorta depends on how much of the game you really wanna dig in to.

Yeah, perhaps people buying it is a fair expectation of them, the non-buying option takes forever to unlock anything.

So how much of a pay-to-win game is this?

Not as much as you'd think. Fair chunk of gameplay for free-to-play, and probably one of the funniest to play.

It can be played entirely without, though it appears as though using bought stuff could given you a significant advantage. I'd only use it to play with non-paying friends, I imagine.

All the DLC are in one pack for $16.99. Not a bad deal if you plan to play this game a bit

Hmm $17 (at 66% off) for all the content? That sounds pretty good. I like when they have to option to just by it all outright or pick and choose. Like how Age of Conan has sub model that gives all the things if you want that in stead of 1 off purchases.

Played the beta, was extremely extremely boring. You can only play single player campaign and the quests are just plain boring.

To play multiplayer you have to pay.
