Hi-Rez Studios has just announced that Tribes: Ascend, a fast paced free-to-play shooter, will be available to Australian gamers on Saturday, February 25th. Also being released alongside the open beta is a new patch that adds a new game mode, four new maps, and new regions.
All player progress and unlocks will be preserved with no planned character wipes. In advance of Open Beta, a significant patch this week will include:
  • New gametype, Arena Deathmatch, with two initial maps
  • New Capture The Flag map, Temple Ruins
  • New Team Deathmatch map, Inferno
  • Two new unlockable items for the Soldier class: Proximity Grenade and Utility Pack
  • New default suits for Doombringer and Brute
  • Ability to view either Blood Eagle or Diamond Sword skins from Class menu
  • Service supporting Name Change
  • Large number of bug-fixes and balance adjustments.
As of Saturday morning, anyone interested can sign up over at the official website with no need for a beta key. So make sure you have your guns loaded as this will be a wild ride.

Been beta testing it.

It has been making leaps and bounds in changes. They merged the older classes back in a patch at the end of January and it uses the Unreal Tournament 3 Engine (heavily modified). Also more recently.

Major Highlights

The game no longer requires a key in order to play. Anyone can join the beta program by simply creating an account on http://www.tribesascend.com and then downloading the game. Players are reminded that their progression in the game will be kept once the beta ends and the game officially launches -- so time spent playing now will be rewarded at launch.
A new gametype, Arena, has been added with two initial maps, Air Arena and Lava Arena. The Arena gametype features five-on-five matches fought on small hazardous maps. The team that wins two rounds wins the match. During the course of a round, each team has 25 respawns. After a team's respawns are depleted, players on that team each get one more life before the round ends. The team with the last man standing wins the round.

So we're getting real close to technical release, or maybe this is the technical release.

I was a massive t1 and t2 player. I struggled to play Ascend until the last massive over haul update. It just didn't feel like tribes one bit.

The game now feels like tribes again and I'm loving it!

Give it a go!
