The awesome open source and free VideoLAN media player (aka VLC) has reached version 2.0 (codenamed "Twoflower") with a new major update. Visually the biggest difference will be noticed for Mac OS X users, who get a completely reworked single-window interface. Other major features are:
. With faster decoding on multi-core, GPU, and mobile hardware and the ability to open more formats, notably professional, HD and 10bits codecs, 2.0 is a major upgrade for VLC.
. Twoflower has a new rendering pipeline for video, with higher quality subtitles, and new video filters to enhance your videos.
. It supports many new devices and BluRay Discs (experimental).
. Completely reworked Mac and Web interfaces and improvements in the other interfaces make VLC easier than ever to use.
. Twoflower fixes several hundreds of bugs, in more than 7000 commits from 160 volunteers.
There are also a series of changes specifically for anime fans, including an improved MKV demuxer, rewritten seeking support in cue files, and significant improvements to the subtitle rendering system to hopefully create a better experience for fansubbed works.

Download it now for Windows or Mac OS X locally from AusGamers.

Yeah, and you can no longer drag and drop video files to the VLC window to play thyem - I have to go Media | Open File.

Incredibly annoying.

hmm, that doesn't look like it's from the VLC team though, just someone who has ported it and is now selling it

Is VLC on Android yet?

No, it is still in development, though there are some knockoffs in the market. I think now that 2.0 is finalised it will get some more attention.

There was an article on Engadget last week talking about v2.0 that made mention of the iOS version which is what prompted me to look up the app store again for it, also mentioning an android version. But yeah, when I jumped on to take a look what it seemed like a third party port to me as well.

Can you not double click the file?

You clearly have different pr0n viewing style than Raven and I.

no drag and drop means i'll stick with the current version.

Even though I've always double clicked, why would they not include drag and drop on the icon in v2 since you can do it with pretty much any other Mac app.

I'm having no problems with drag and drop, updated to 2.0 and it all seems fine.

I'm really enjoying the new version. Love that they updated the fullscreen controls which before I didn't like at all. Another cool thing is they moved the subtitles menu out of the Video controls so now you can switch fast.

Haters gonna hate, hey? The drag and drop works on the Windows version.

A big of googling tells me you can drag-drop from a local drive, but not a network share. Which is how I use all my files.
And yes, this is on doze.

Is it as good as mpc yet? Vlc wasn't that great on my Htpc and i couldn't get bitstream audio working with it properly.

Maybe log it as a bug - it doesn't look like it's in their bugtracker (at least I can't see anything obvious searching for 'drag' or 'drop').

Must be a bug, drag and drop works fine from my network drives.

I've started to favour MPlayerX on Mac. The one thing I liked better in VLC was the forward / back 10 second buttons which was never in windows version I don't think, and it's now gone on Mac as well with 2.0. MPlayerX doesn't have the buttons on the interface either but it works with left and right arrow. MPlayerX on Mac just seems like a more polished package. Always seemed to get a few problems with VLC.

ALT+left arrow/right arrow does that for me on Windows. I would guess the Mac version is their magic squiggle key and the arrows?

http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/6158 might be the same bug you're seeing with opening files from shares. There's still no bug logged on Windows though.

the forward/back buttons still do that on mac, but only in fullscreen for some reason

Thanks for this news item. Installed. Probably wouldn't have noticed otherwise since 'Check updates' doesn't pick up the new version currently.

Drag and drop from a share not working for me on Windows 7. Must have the same pr0n viewing technique as trog, since I never use that feature.
