DC Universe, the now Free-To-Play MMO that lets you choose to be the hero or the villian, has turned one year old. To celebrate the special occasion, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) is giving every player a cape with the number "1" on the back.

The cape will be granted to players through their mission journal on January 11. The character must exist on the 11th to be eligible to receive the mission. However, players do not need to log in on the 11th; as long as the character exists on the 11th, players will receive the mission the next time they log in. This is all in American time, so us Australians' still have a few hours left to get the cape!

Here are some pretty impressive statistics since DC Universe Online launched:
  • More than 3.5 million Heroes, more than 2 million Villains
  • More than 1.8 million registered players on PC, and more than 2.3 million registered players on PS3
  • 3.6 million days of playtime total by all players in-game
  • More than 1,200 new NPC characters added since launch
  • More than 200 new quests added since launch
  • More than 2,500 new items added since launch
  • More than 15 new zones added since launch
  • More than 1,800 new encounters since launch

It's pretty damn good for a free game, nothing beats running around metropolis at superspeed with the christmas music playing, running up buildings and taking giant leaps and whatnot...

downloaded it the other night, i tried 5 other free to play mmos like champions online, lord of the rings online, star trek, warhammer, played them for 20 mins, played this for 10 hours and loving it! i came from wow 7+years! Combat system is pretty neat!

I like combos, they're the coolest thing about the game imo.

It's obviously part of the whole console thing, but I really like how it reduces the skillbar clutter you get in other MMOs - to get the same number of attacks in other games the skillbar would be about double in since.

I haven't actually played it since I hit max level though, is there much to do once you get there? Can't say i'm interested in PVP at all.

Yeah I stopped around max level, still, got a ton of awesome content for free! And the combat is sweeet. I can't believe that they somehow do actor collision in an mmo when you run at a bajillion miles an hour, and stand on the sides/underneath of any object you encounter, but also pick it up. Their server code must be nuts.
