Console gamers already know the thrill of endlessly gliding above the streets of Mayor Quincy Sharp's city-to-prison abomination, Arkham City, and today PC gamers will finally be given that opportunity too.

Batman: Arkham City, one of the year's most decorated releases, makes its PC debut today (available on Steam, Origin and other digital stores, as well as at retail) with a host of PC-specific features such as heady use of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX PhysX, which you can catch in the video embedded below, and for anyone who missed it, we have an in-depth review of game, as played on Xbox 360, which offers a pretty good insight into why you should put Skyrim down, even just for a little bit, and don the cowl of Batman.

It's also worth noting that the second batch of DLC for the game, the Robin Bundle Pack is now also available alongside the Nightwing and Catwoman Bundle Packs, and will set you back 520 MS Points or $11.45 for PSN and PC. Watch the video for it right here.

Still having way too much fun completing side missions, solving riddler puzzles and collecting trophies to be getting the robin and nightwing bundle pack. I haven't even touched any of the other modes yet.

I haven't tried the Nightwing challenge maps yet, but the Robin ones were pretty cool. Theres one thats on a train, and it plays like an old school side-scrolling beat-em-up, and culminates with a fight against Black Mask.

Lol. That sucks. Check their page, normally they say if the game is non steam/EADM and requires the game to be already installed. I would take it up with them and push for a refund if they f***ed up the page.

I was checking BF3 prices and found a key store saying activate with steam and loled.

Whats the point of buying a key if you still need to torrent it? Unlocks online play and gives you a legit version, but the torrent versions are slow and sometimes buggy. I paid for a key for Batman1 because it deserved it but my torrent version was still buggy and crashed although the key allowed me to post scores online (not that i was interested in that).

GFWL doesnt have a DL client AFAIK.

Its s***** if the key store didnt mention the key was for non-steam version. Dirt 3, batman 1, street fighter are all keys i can recall that specifically said they were non steam.

They said it was for GFWL only, I just wasn't aware that GFWL didn't let you download the game. Lesson learned. MS are bad at online gaming, Steam continues to be the best.

You know what I hate about this game, is that there's always a bunch of guys you need to fight. I've only had one bit where I could use gargoyles and intelligence to get rid of the guys. But the rest you gotta fight - and fighting is the boring bit because you just keep doing the same s*** over and over until they're gone. In a couple spots I was able to keep jumping off buildings to smash them, but the bad guys kept teasing me for being a pussy.
I can't seem to get the dropping shockwave attack or whatever to work either.

Also, am I meant to be solving all the riddler puzzles? Cos a few I've found are totally f***ed... I'm assuming I will get more abilities later in the game that will make solving them a bit more possible?

blahnana
Posted 11:20am 25/11/11
And yet I find there's not enough guys to fight! Considering there's a whole bunch of useful accessories that can be triggered in a fight, I always feel like I don't get enough practice to get my gadget multiplier up!

FYI, Steve posted some news from Rocksteady about the DX11 issues:

i don't think it's mandatory to complete them. you will have to wait until you get some extra gadgets to complete some. i believe there's also a few you can complete until you do a new game+
Khel
Posted 01:44pm 25/11/11
You can definitely complete enough to catch the Riddler without doing New game+. I haven't got all of them yet, but I got enough that I uncovered where the Riddler was and caught him, and I haven't finished New game+.

But yeah, a lot of them need gadgets you don't have at the start. Some of them need gadgets you wont get until very close to the end.

yeah given up trying to get any more of the riddler trophies, there is a couple of them that have really given me the s****. i've only got like 2 or 3 of the riddler hostages

not to mention bf3 has consumed me since being released, and i want to get back onto dark souls at some point

there is one trophy in particular that has pissed me off, it's in the industrial area. you step on this button and 3 hydraulic doors open just down in front of you and there are 2 question marks you have to knock out with batarangs. the question mark to the right has 2 doors in front of it that open when you step in the button as well as the main door to the area. the question mark to the left has no doors guarding it apart from that main one.

when you step on the button the doors open and then start closing slowly straight away.

annoying++

If its the one I think it is, I used remote batarangs to hit the buttons I think, cos while you're driving the remote batarang time slows down and (especially if you accelerate it when you can) it gives you enough time to hit all the question marks. If its the one I'm thinking of that is.

aha khel, REMOTE batarang! I think I can get a few more riddler trophies....

The one where there's 6 question marks to blow, each in a cage. I figured I can get 3 of them with explosive gel, and batarang the rest, but I always miss it by half a second. It doesn't help that batman is a slow fat c*** with clumsy weapon switching.

You get the new game+ mode when you finish the game. You get to keep all your gadgets, xp, combos etc but bosses & enemies become smarter/harder to defeat and you don't get the indiators above their heads for countering. Haven't touched it yet. Wanna see how far i can go with my current game save, only up to 61%.

I've got 2 side missions left, the riddler hostages and the identity thief. The identity thief one is pissing me off because all it says is "find further leads to the investigation" and i have no idea what to do.

I really liked the Catwoman mission where you had to break into the Tyger vault and steal s***, wish there was more missions like that in the game. I didn't really like going round the city and fighting as much with Catwoman, cos her arsenal just felt too crippled compared to the seven shades of s*** you could kick out of people as Batman, but the sneaky, stealthy stealing stuff bits were cool.

I've played a bit, at first it was a bit annoying with the 3 layers of DRM (deplete a key usage allowance, steam, and then GFWL) and was having issues with DX11 and it not starting in fullscreen anymore after I updated GWFL (ended up fixing that somehow by clicking customer experience in the GFWL overlay, and saying no I didn't want to participate).

It's a great game. The story isn't as smooth as the first, the completely open world and side missions / novelty elements everywhere is a bit overwhelming / disjointed. But once you get a few upgrades, getting around Arkham City becomes really really fun and I forgot all about that. ;)

i've played it for a bit and atm i think i prefer arkham asylum. it feels like they've just thrown me in the deep end and told me to have fun without actually showing me s*** i can do. pretty much all i'm doing is following the way points on the map and trying to get the riddler trophy's on the way to missions.

Yep that's what the game sets out to do. It doesn't hold your hand and it leaves it up to you to decide what you want to do, when you want to do it and how. After all Batman is the world's greatest detective. It's just a matter of looking at your map and deciding what you want to do next in terms of major/minor objectives. You can also set custom waypoints so you can navigate the city a bit easier to reach riddles etc. That or you can just randomly dive bomb/glide around coming across s*** and beating up punks to level up. I love the scope of the game because you can never run out of things to do. Something i found lacking in the AA. In saying that one thing I did find overwhelming are all the COMBO GAMING moves i had to learn. Execution wasn't difficult but it was a matter of remembering what to do when.

I'm keen for a third, though not trying to force Arkham into the title would be nice. That being said, I felt like they were reaching with some of the batman-universe characters crammed into this one (I'd never heard of some of them), and I don't think it needed the arkham-prison context (could have just been a crime ridden city centre with a heavy handed military rule having recently sprung up).
Raider

best way to do the 2nd ground of AR missions is to tap dive bomb so you can fly down those narrow paths.. i couldn't figure out how to do it till i started tapping the dive bomb and it became ez after that since you could control your elevation
Nerfy
Posted 09:35am 03/12/11
Yeah you have to tap it twice for that stupid tunnel one, took me ages to perfect that. Going through all the extra stuff after the credits now, there's still a fair bit to go, and a ton of new dialogue and stuff, which is unexpected. Must be the longest damn night ever though, when I started there was at least 10 hours to go until protocol 10. I guess it kinda makes sense given that Gotham is in winter... >_>

Its not Rocksteady's fault that you're not famiilar enough with the source material :P All the villains they used are pretty well established characters in the comics and are all part of Batman's rogues gallery. Except Deadshot, I mean, hes still a pretty well estbalished character in the comics (and was even in some of the animated shows), but hes not strictly a Batman villain, still was pretty cool to see him in there.

My only real complaint about the roster of villains is some felt a bit under-used and too short. Was a bit disappointed that Black Mask only shows up in the intro and then in a DLC challenge map, and that Mad Hatter bit was awesome so I was a bit let down when there wasn't more (I was expecting it to be like the Scarecrow from Arkham Asylum). Same with Deadshot, he really only shows up in time to get taken down and locked in a train carriage, and Hush was not much more than a tease for a future game.
Nerfy
Posted 11:49am 03/12/11
I knew who deadshot was, but I don't remember seeing a few of the others in the animated series at least. Especially Solomon Grundy, the underground robots, and Hugo Strange, though Strange was pretty good. I'd never seen past the original Robin, or who Oracle was either, but got the gist of it over the previous game and reading up on the robin dlc. I never really liked Ras Al Ghul, more preferred the Nolan'ish apprach of keeping it slightly more grounded in realistic-feeling constraints (at least with immortality etc).

Also realised today, seems just about everybody in the batman universe is caucasian. :P

edit: Also was I supposed to rescue Vicki Vale from the Mad Hatter or something? I did his tea party quest thing, but she was there when he appeared, and now seems to be gone.
Khel
Posted 11:56am 03/12/11
Yeah, the robots and the whole Wonder City thing was created for the game, but Solomon Grundy has been in the comics a lot, though dunno about the animated shows. He might have been in the animated Justice League series, but I don't think in Batman. Grundy is another one I spose that isn't strictly a Batman villain.

Hugo Strange has been around for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages, but hes not particularly interesting so doesn't get used much and is probably one of the more obscure characters in the game. I was honestly quite suprised when early on they announced he was one of the main villains, I was like "Nobody is going to have any idea who this guy is", but they kinda of treated him like he was a new character just being introduced in the game, so that worked.

Azrael is probably another of the more obscure characters, especially since it was the new Azrael they used, who's comic got cancelled after less than a year cos nobody was reading it.

Oracle is the original Batgirl, Commissioner Gordon's daughter. Joker shot her and crippled her and put her in a wheelchair so now she chills out in front of computers and acts as Batman's intelligence network.
Nerfy
Posted 12:01pm 03/12/11
Heh yeah I'd read up on oracle in the Arkham Asylum, I'd seen batgirl a few times so was relatively keeping up with that one.

Azrael must be the dude who's missions I haven't finished, I thought that it might have actually been the mask of phantasm character, but that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for batman not to know who that was now.

Strange worked out fairly well overall, Spoiler:
he seemed to be blaring our Batman's identity to everybody within earshot towards the end, but certain explosions might have taken care of that...
Khel
Posted 12:18pm 03/12/11
Azrael must be the dude who's missions I haven't finished

Yeah, hes the dude you randomly find on rooftops, with the flaming sword, and he leaves runes behind. The original Azrael was part of the whole Knightfall saga where Bane broke Batman's back, then Azrael took over as Batman but went power mad and a bit crazy and Bruce Wayne had to stop him. The new Azrael on the other hand is some token black guy who nobody gives a s*** about. They planned a cross-over between the Azrael comic, and Batman, but then the Azrael comic got cancelled before the cross-over came out, so when the cross-over came out it was just stupidly confusing and made people dislike him even more. Not very well played on DC's part.

They had a new harley voice actor, it was a little noticeable but still reasonably good. Also you know what sucks, the bat computer thing when you press 'tab'. No labels on anything. I was over half way through the game before I realised all the different things that come up when you press 'tab' (when it tells you) can be accessed from the same screen by pressing those little unmarked icons and other similar navigation.
And the riddles are very hard to follow. The riddle appears for a second when you first enter an area, and the riddler page in the bat computer is just wtf.

the riddles on the riddler page have an icon that look like [o]

the menu system in arkham asylum was pretty bad too, but i think it was better than the system in arkham city.

dunno about PC but on the 360 all the menus are clearly labelled and it has the LT RT RB LB buttons there visible to allow you to cycle through menus and their sub menus. I think the menus work well for the sheer amount of content being presented to you.

The riddler page is confusing at the start but once you start collecting s*** and marking them off you start figure out what's what.
Khel
Posted 02:17pm 05/12/11
Yeah, the menus worked well enough on 360, you don't have to rely on the riddle flashing up on screen when you enter a zone, if you go to that menu page you can see all the riddles in every zone and read them at your leisure. Also, if you interrogate the Riddler's henchmen it marks locations on your map. When you get the Tyger decryption software for your decoder gadget, you can hack the CC TV mainframes and that'll put the locations of all the cameras on your map too.

I didn't get the collector's edition or anything, but I got the pre-order one that came with Robin. Now that I think about it though, maybe you need to beat the game first before you can do it, cos it definitely lets me pick a costume when I go back in and continue my normal game, but I've already finished the main storyline, so maybe thats what unlocked the ability to do it. I've been playing my normal game as the Earth 1 Batman, and New Game+ as Animated Batman :P

Any idea if there's any point to that? I did it in one region, and it just cluttered my map with icons...

Theres riddler challenges to kill all the cameras, thats the point.

I finished the main storyline and didn't get any batman suits either :( not sure about catwoman cause i never got to around picking her again after finishing the storyline. Not enough gadgets so she feels very limited. Anyone bought the Nightwing and Robin DLC? what's the verdict?
Khel
Posted 08:39pm 05/12/11
The Robin DLC came free with mine, its not bad, its only challenge maps though, no campaign stuff. The Robin ones were cool though, he has some fun gadgets, and he has a map where you fight Black Mask (the map itself is really novel as well cos its done like a side scrolling beat-em-up).

I bought the Nightwing DLC but haven't even played it yet, but its just challenge maps too.
Fixah

Oh they're just challenge maps? i thought they were part of the campaign :(

I haven't even gotten around playing batman challenge maps! some of those riddler trophies are doing my head in..

Nah only Catwoman and Batman are in the storyline. Still looking for riddles, seriously some of them are hard. And the trophies, holy crap some of them require rocket science.

I just installed this and holy s*** what a clusterf*** of a process. You have 3 f*****g groups that need/have your CD-Key, Steam, Securom and GFWL. I was going to give it a play tonight but GFWL demanded that I update their s***** client and booted me out of the game while simultaneously f*****g up their own installation.

If I had pirated the game I wouldn't have to put up with this s*** and yet they are measures put in place as a deterrent to piracy?

Pro tip: be weary some of trophies that require explosive gel! and not all require gadgets some need careful gliding, bomb diving and wall bouncing.

The ones that took me the longest to figure out

Spoiler:
were the ones where you need to get up high above the pad, then bomb dive down onto it, to hit it with enough force that it lights up all the arrows. Like that carnival game where you need to hit the thing with a sledgehammer and try and ring the bell.
Khel
Posted 09:46am 06/12/11
Oh and another thing I didn't know, which I didn't find out till right near the end (by accident actually) is if you have multiple explosive gels set up, you can detonate them individually by zooming in on the one you want to detonate.

Installing these arkham games is s*** isn't it, usually have to start it two or three times to get that f*****g MSN thing that is inbuilt to work, what a piece of s***.

I was surprised when I discovered grappling between multiple buttons, tightrope walking, and the different ways dive bombing can be used to get the trophies. Still don't have them all, I don't think I even have enough to do the last riddler mission - though I'm not sure how that works.

haha yeah i did that one last night! took me a while to figure out as well .

A similar to that one that i figured out last night is:

Spoiler:
There are 4 pads in a square separated by fence and the only way to press them all without stepping on the ground is to shoot straight up, glide around and bomb dive back down again, rinse repeat 3 times and BAM! I'M BATMAN!

Oh and another thing I didn't know, which I didn't find out till right near the end (by accident actually) is if you have multiple explosive gels set up, you can detonate them individually by zooming in on the one you want to detonat
OMG you serious, that's a bit s***** because they should tell you how to use a gadget. That's the one trophy that is s***ting me to tears ! i had the right idea i just didn't know how to execute it. I tried everything except that. I was this close to looking it up on the net.

Yeah i think you are thinking of the same one im thinking of, it's the one on the far left of the map where you step on a pad and the two fences on the side go up to secure the 3 question marks.

What % of game completion are you up to? I'm at 66% with only the riddler side mission left and something like 270 trophies out of 400 (not sure if that's 400 batman and catwoman). Still need to save the last riddler hostage and have no idea how many riddles/trophies i need to collect to trigger it.
Khel
Posted 01:03pm 06/12/11
Not sure, can't check atm, but I think I'm around 85% , maybe a bit less, but I'm pretty sure its in the 80's

I've got most of the riddler trophies, just need a few remaining ones in the subway I think, haven't got all the Catwoman ones but I dunno if that counts towards completion or not (but theres an achievement for it anyway so I'll probably do it). Killed all the cameras and all the breakable stuff and solved all the riddles though, and completed all the challenges.

I've only done a few of the challenge maps though, and haven't finished New Game+, I dunno if those count towards the 100% completion.

Another thing I was disappointed with was that there were no vehicles, not even not-really-drivable ones like in the asylum. I would expect to be able to tear it up in a car and a plane if they come out with a game set in gotham with access to the manor and the cave.

yes planes and cars in a prison city

what could go wrong there

even if you could fly the batwing - what are you going to do in it that you couldn't already do in the ground ?

If so: Spoiler:
Get up somewhere high on another building and then just glide over them.

the most absurd trophy is one that requires you to throw out a controllable batwing then fast shoot it with the electro gun... was looking for a god damn broken wire with electricity down in the subway for too long.

Are you serious?! I have 2 trophies left and that's one of them because I too spent ages trying to look for electricity out of a wire, I even found one above in the subway maintenance access but it was too far away for the controlled batarang. I initially thought the nearby electric charge for those roller doors had something to do with it. Who would have thought..Sheesh.

the best way to play the game is ignore all side missions and focus on the main story, so that the time sensitive elements of it have a modicum of impact. doing all the side missions after finishing the main story is even referred to in the ending...

you wont be able to get a lot of trophies until you get certain gadgets that you only get during the main storyline.

I did the main story first but also did some side missions and collected some trophies on the way. I just felt the game would last longer if I did that and didn't want to be overwhelmed with all the collectables left over, cause there's a s***load.
