As noted by Reverend in the forums, the first patch for id Software's recently released Rage is now available - the Bethesda blog summarises the changes:
Implemented workaround for AMD driver crash right after intro cinematic on Win 7 32-bit systems.
Disabled UBOs because they are causing animation issues with AMD drivers. Don’t allow swap-tear to be enabled on AMD while the extension is not exposed because it may crash.
Support for new video settings: “texture cache”, “vsync”, and ”anisotropic filter”
Automatically adjust vt_maxPPF based on the number of available cores.
Improved performance for SLI cards when GPU transcode is enabled.
Fix for GPU Transcoding option being disabled after exiting gameplay.
Added safe mode to restore video settings to default values.
Allow g_fov to be changed from the RAGE launch options in Steam.
Server now forwards text chat from clients to all other clients while in-game.
There changes are covered in more detail on the Steam announcement.

There's been quite a few complaints from PC gamers disappointed in the visual quality of the game on the PC - particularly around the texture popping issue (which seems to be a combination of driver and game issues), the appearance of lower resolution textures, and the comparative lack of ability to tweak the visual settings. id Software's Todd Hollenshead acknowledged that so far the driver updates provided haven't fixed everyone's problem but indicated that they - and the video card companies - are still working on the problem, which will hopefully bring hope to the PC gaming community.

Let us know if this new patch makes a difference for you in the comments!

what happened to you id software? you used to be cool?

lol

i mean, its their first frickin release in over 7 years and teh launch is botched by buggy driver support and inadequate gpu testing, i just cant see how the brains at id could have let this type of thing happen, a smooth pc launch is essential to the games success because it gives glowing reviews in the gamin sites which leads to more sales, a classic example of a good game with a botched launch is brink, now it has no community support.

i agree with you reverend, i am lucky the shipping time from the uk with ozgameshop.com takes about 7 working days....those 7 working days let them iron out the obvious mistakes!

Yeah just got it working today, it was unplayable just lagged after the cutscene couldnt even get out of the first room. Still has really bad graphics, I just can't see how ID screwed a game up so much it looks like a 4 year old FPS on my PC LOL and it's not a piece of crap. I don't even think the game is that good after all the screwing around, seen it all before. Might just play Borderlands again it has better graphics and gameplay, if you haven't purchased this game for PC yet don't bother. ID need to ditch this gaming engine and learn to code.

I'm running ati/amd and only had to change a couple of settings to stop the texture popping in.

Still some weird problems, my gun changes randomly without me pressing the scroll wheel.

A save got corrupted when it crashed.

And the crash happened trying to enter the shrouded bunker the second time, took me about twenty tries to get in, would crash on loading.

It's a fun game, looks great in lot's of places and hopefully this update one fixes most peoples problems.

seriously, if you have ATI (sorry amd, whatever) then get the preview *2*.... preview 1 had terrible performance, preview 2 was like going from night to day. (for me)

It's a 79 on metacritic for the PC version and some really bad reviews, such as this. I admit I have cherry picked that from the bottom but it is still a terrible review, and 79 is a bad score for such a major release by id.

But hey, you quoted some forum randoms and scooby (the biggest id fanboi ever even bigger than trog) so I guess you must be really onto something there.

lol no s***** reviews? I ripped these straight off that metacritic site you seem to masturbate over -

This game is not good. In short, the plot is pretty dull, the voice acting is average (excepting a few characters), and the aesthetics are completely uninspired. It's all just amber monitors and 'future shine' with tons of useless clutter thrown in everywhere. I wouldn't really care much about those things if the game play was any good, but it's not. Dues Ex doesn't do much but sample and dilute the game play from superior titles. It doesn't do stealth nearly as good as splinter cell, thief, or Hitman. It doesn't do combat as good a myriad of recent and ancient titles too long to list, and the RPG elements are pretty bare bones. It's basically, talk to it, shoot it, stun it, or walk around it (hacks / stealth).

Poor voice acting, terrible looks and false choice do not make a great game. I've played the game for close to 5 hours now and am very nearly ready to uninstall. It's annoying at every turn. The game doesn't let you make the dialogue choices that would benefit the character I would like, but I'm not sure it matters. Be an average guy or be a slightly worse than average guy and things play out the same. It's really disconcerting going into a police station, shooting some cops, then waiting around until they forgive you. So realistic. Even if you can suspend your disbelief for these things, the unskippable cut-scenes, the general poor looks, often grating voice acting will get to you in the end

There is nothing good at all in this game. The AI is the single worst I have ever seen. The graphics (despite DX11) are very bad with overly simplistic environments made up of the same prop copied over and over. Likewise the sounds are repetitive and enemies will get on your nerves repeating the same thing over and over again. Character models look at least 4 years old, to compare I went to Half Life 2 which is 6 years old, about the same.

Well, I've been playing PC games since the 70's and the one thing I've learnt is that hype is usually a cover for mediocricy. Most people here seem happy to tow the line and click 10/10, but seriously few games have warranted such a blanket response. For me games should be about the experience you get, like reading a good book you should forget where you actually are and enter the imagnation of the writer. The amount of times I dropped out this game was shocking. It suffices to say that had this game been released 10 years ago it would have been jaw droppingly amazing but in the here and now, it is just plain bad.

So what now? I mean I played the game and I have to say the AI was probably the worst I have ever seen in a game, let alone one released in 2011.

I remember shooting a cop just outside the police station and just stood there next to the corpse, smoking a cigarette and picking my nose while these other cops kept walking right passed doing their rounds as if nothing had happened. Not only that, I remember the body being there like 5 days later when I was finally ready to leave Detroit lol.. Totally ruined the experience for me and I deleted it. It was a soulless game.

But yeah, each to their own I guess.

And who's winding who up? It's obvious you are feeling the heat, to start bringing up conspiracy s*** and dan carter? lol, go back to sleep buddy.

I gotta say the Game Arena review is pretty poor and I feel (putting my fanboy hate aside) that it doesn't actually reflect the game. They harp on about the driving parts not taking into account that its a side part to the game, they then compare it to track mania... WTF.. They then say hold off till BF3.. WTF.

Not only that but the reviewer is playing it wrong
"The reason I'm noticing frame drops is because frankly, I could play Rage asleep. Start quest. Drive to quest. Enter corridor. Shoot everything that moves. Leave corridor. Drive back to quest starter. End quest. Rinse. Repeat. "

Sure if you wan't to rush out a review that might be the way to go about it, but since i have started the playing the game it has been a case spending time between quests to gamble, do some racing explore the towns go bandit hunting.

The reviewer is also forgetting that this game is a shooter... "Shoot everything that moves" huh?! isn't that what you do in shooters. Sure ignore the mind control bolts that let you take control of someone and use them as a bomb. Ignore the rc cars and other cool ways to take out guys. Lets not forget that "everything that moves" has great f*****g AI, some of the best i have ever seen.

Also
"Why did you survive? Why did you get picked to enter the Ark in the first place? These are the questions you'll find yourself asking when you first enter the Wasteland - but only until you are overwhelmed by the striking beauty of your surroundings. "

What!?! No one complained about these things in Half life... 1 or 2. Throwing the character into it is half the fun. Using your imagination to fill in the gaps... Half the fun.

I honest feel that this review and a few others stepped up to it thinking it was going to be as detailed as fallout 3/NV and instead of critique the game as a FPS they dug into all the things they felt it was missing with out actually mentioning any of them.

As a shooter, that i compare to any other shooter the game stands out in its genre. That is not to say it hasn't got it's flaws.. The ati graphic issues shoudl of been nutted out before release, the story had the potential to be a lot better constructed and the people you talk to around town could of been a bit more interesting than "nice race man!". But that s*** is easily put aside when you focus on what a great shooter it is.

One thing id does right is make great shooters, and there is no arguing that rage isn't a great shooter. Anything else it trys to be it falls abit short...

I enjoyed the game, thought it was worth the money and will recommend it to people who I think will enjoy it.

fpot, i get where you are coming from, and i am enjoying arc getting wound up over this. my post is purely a dig at the game arena review.

By some twist of black magic, I managed to finally find the exact solar alignment required to get the game running playable on this old ATI HD 4870 and man, those compatibility teething problems aside, it really does play nice.

I also have to say that I agree with the criticism of most of those negative reviews. It seems they all want to whine that it's not the game that they would have made, that it's missing feature x that since that feature was in first person shooter y all first person shooters must also have it or they instantly fail.

In particular, I'm really tired of people drawing comparisons with Fallout and Borderlands, just because they are thematically similar, when in reality they offer completely different experiences.

I really don't agree with that line of thought. First person shooters were originally a narrow genre, but anyone should be able to see now that FPS is now just a reference to the camera perspective and the underlying games can be vastly diverse.

While I agree, its fun to wind up arc about this, the game does actually look better than I was anticipating from some of those truly horrible trailers. The only real reason I haven't picked up a cheap key to try it out is because I'm already overwhelmed with more games than I can play, with more on the way after this month and in November.

Also got enough FPS games already on the go with Deus Ex and Dead Island and Battlefield 3 in a few weeks time. Maybe next time things get quiet, I'll pick it up and try it out.

Yeah I'll be playing it too when I have the time and it is cheap on steam.

The reason it makes a difference is paid reviewers are accountable for their reviews. If they do a dodgy one and make mistakes they will get in trouble from their editor. The user reviews can be done by anyone, even people like you arc, which makes them inherently unreliable.

I previously posted that the patch fixed my texture issues, but I was wrong.

On a GTX275 (latest drivers), quad-core i7 920 + 12GB ram, texture cache set to 'high' in-game - the game runs ridiculously silky smooth at 1920x1200 but simply looking away from something and then straight back will make the textures load in low-res mode and then pop to a higher-res version right in front of me. The continuous texture glitches are really distracting me from the gameplay.

This is some serious fail.

I'm pretty sure a majority of pc gamers would be mostly fine with the fact that you can't modify video settings as long as there wasn't any horribly distracting bugs (ie, so there wasn't even a need to change settings in the first place nomsain?).

My comment was more at the horrible QA and general disregard for a large portion of their player base which, regardless of any truth to that statement, is very much how it's been received.
