If you never saw the awesome side-scrolling experiment that was the original Super Mario Bros. with a Portal gun, you're missing out.
Thankfully the author of said experiment has decided to actually go ahead and create a game around his curiosity which we're assuming will be shut-down within minutes of being released, so are giving you a heads-up early in a chance that you just *might* be able to get your hands on it before Nintendo's lawyers do.
It's ambitious, to say the least, but the team at Stab Yourself are releasing it for free with the source code and are encouraging the community to build and share maps.
So who knows, Mari0 might actually survive release, but either way, we're happy it's even just in development.
Looks like it'll be pretty fun to play. The mushrooms would still serve a purpose in that you can still take an extra hit from enimies. Hopefully Nintendo don't lay down the ban hammer, i'd imagine even if they do it'll still make it way around via other means. Mario Kart Source still seems to be in development and that's been going on for years though nothing actually released yet either.
Nintendo doesn't go after that many fan-made games. All the ones I can think of accepted donations, so couldn't really claim their work was non-profit.
I'd like to see this be released along with the real mario bros 2 levels as well. You know the one that japan got. All of them and if he really wanted to spoil us, some custom ones that are hard as s*** and need the gun.
