The Secret World is Funcom's secret weapon in the MMORPG arms race. Devoid of classic MMO concepts such as player levels and classes, The Secret World looks set to shake the MMO videogame foundations and make something of a modern impact.

This is also due in part to the game's modern setting. There's no old-world fantasy or far-out sci fi here, only places, people and a time all too recognisable in modern context, giving the game something of an accessible edge over some of the more hardcore games in the genre out there.

Funcom today announced that registration for the game's beta period is now open.
First phase of ‘The Secret War’ interactive online experience now available, combining choice of secret society with the beta registration.

Second phase will allow gamers to unlock guaranteed beta access, achievements, exclusive in-game items, and even win a Funcom studio tour.

Gamers can now register to be evaluated for participation in the upcoming phases of beta that will be running up to the launch of the game in April 2012. During the next months Funcom will be increasing the number of beta participants gradually. The launch of the beta registration also signals the start of the first phase ‘The Secret War’, an interactive online experience that engages community members in the conflict between the Templars, the Illuminati, and the Dragon – the three factions in ‘The Secret World’ – even before the game is released.
You can register for the beta by clicking here, and stay tuned for more on the game from AusGamers in the not-too-distant-future.

We have a batch of new art for the game as well, which you can check out in more detail by clicking the thumbnails below.

Surely Faceman is all over this MMO. I did the personality test and one of the questions was asking whether I believed there was something put in the water to keep us under control

I did the test to see what faction I would suit when this was first announced ages ago, it said Illuminati, did it again today, still Illuminati, so I'll go with that. Bit s*** that it needs facebook, I deleted it not long ago but it had not finalised... stopped it to sign up for this o.O.

Yeah, I went Illuminati as well, Templars sounded cool but a little bit too goody-goody justice seeking for my liking.
