Despite all the noise recently about DOTA 2, Eurogamer managed to not forget Blizzard are working on their own DOTA - an internally developed mod for StarCraft 2 - and got some time with Blizzard to chat about it recently,
revealing that it is has been completely rebooted - "flattened" - since it's showing at Blizzcon last year. One of the big goals is to make it more accessible to newbies:
"DOTA's a very addictive game that chases the vast majority of people off because their team mates are screaming at them. We've always felt DOTA has a very accessible, easy to approach fun game deep down inside that's just waiting to come out.
"We've just been basically carving around that and trying to knock off all the rough edges and really make it more user friendly."
With the huge install base that StarCraft 2 has, it sure will be fascinating to see how gamers spread between the various versions after they're all released!

It might be refreshing to try something that isn't just DOTA 2.0 too.
