Some big news today with the
announcement from Valve about a new Counter-Strike title:
Next Gen Console, PC, and Mac Release Targeted for Early 2012
August 13, 2011 – Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).
Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched exactly 12 years ago (CS beta 1, August 1999).
CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.
“Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999,” said Doug Lombardi, VP of Marketing at Valve. “For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS’ award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.”
CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year’s PAX Prime and London Games Festival.

What happened to them over the years? Are they millionairs or did they sell it to valve for $15,000 thinking that was alot at the time and nowdays it's worth millions?
Would love to see a doco on CS (the mod) to current day and the original author(s)...

Teq every fps game is an FPS game. I don't understand what point you are trying to make. I expect they will hopefully expand on the current game type and it won't just be about defusing the bomb!. Battlefield is a constantly re-jigged franchise yet it still gets numbers because the style of play is proven.

What? How? That doesn't make any sense.
F*****g hell, I really wish people would stop calling 5-6 year old game consoles "next-gen." It's current-gen, ffs.

Wow! just looked at the tf2 stats on steam... it has gotten more popular? or is that a spike like Terraria?
I'd love to see es_ and as_ maps back! How good was that vent into the CT spawn on oilrig :P or when they added an APC to cs_seige and you could reverse every c*** into wall blocking the whole team! memories!

lol yeah right, obviously you havent been playing since the beta versions of it.
Because no version of the game could ruin years and years of awesome memories playing it.
sounds alright, hope they do upgrade the engine/physics and graphics to be up-to-date
I remember when HL2 came out and the physics system was amazing and ground breaking

I hope they don't change it to more like bf.. if i wanted to play bf i'd play bf, if i wanted to play cs i'd play cs, if i wanted to play a game where i get called a cheater because i'm destroying and get 2 huey's and kicked by an admin in the first time i've played for 3 months i'd play black ops.

siege and oilrig are probably my most missed maps that i can remember
bring back bunny-hopping option for servers, that s*** was fun as.

best part of oilrig was if you were a terrorist and spawned in the birds nest above ct spawn. you could jump down through the window in ct spawn and wipe them out before they had even left spawn.
the apc in siege was awesome. i used to love f*****g around with it and getting it stuck in the walls/bridge.
i hope they do bring back the AS game type. i miss oilrig and tundra.

Minh Le and Jess Cliffe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minh_Le
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jess_Cliffe
Both got hired by Valve but Minh Le is now working on his own new CS type game.
I know some of the mappers that contributed to the game got hired by Gearbox, and others committed suicide.
The problem I have with CS is that everyone that plays regularly on the only maps that are available (dust and office) have the gameplay down to a formula, so it gets boring quickly. There isn't enough variety to keep people on their toes like in the pre-source days.

yeah bring back some old maps ffs, soooo over office and dust 2.
Thats all every server plays and when you find a server playing something like italy you go in and its some bulls*** zombie server.
After optus got rid of their CS servers it all started going downhill.

Oilrig was easily my favourite but also siege, MILITIA!!! and assault.
I also used to love mansion or whatever the similar one was called. I used to mp5 or AK rush straight out the first window I could find and try to get to CT spawn.
Ahhh those were the days.

cs_militia
I remember playing sauce and the only server that ran cs_militia was games.on.net then they shut it downa nd i stopped playing.

What happened to valve?
Posted 07:11pm 14/8/11
cs has been on consoles for f*****g years.
Posted 07:33pm 14/8/11
- this game is not going to replace CS 1.6, or CS:S, it is primary made for consoles, PC version is just kind of a "bonus"
- at the moment, the game looks more like HL2DM
- There is no recoil and there will never be. (because of the consoles)
- the game runs on L4D2 engine
- SourceTV is NOT a priority
- they are working on match making system
- new money system
- no kevlar (this should be fixed in the future)
- maps are simplyfied for XBOX style, less ways, most fights are close range
- Hidden Path (Valve only finances the game) is trying to make all weapons balanced.

they made a mod for CS called 'Surf' which popped up in TF2 as well.
It's way more fun the original game, and the maps are all made by the community.
TF2 was a very nice looking game, though Surf mod kicks the crap out of it. It's a shame there's more hack servers out there where players go for free hats and stuff than Surf mode servers.
Nice to see that 3FL still has one though.
They need to make that 3.

Don't really care for competitive gaming so as long as it is still fun for a bash I will be happy. He is a lot less enthusiastic compared with this dude :P http://www.eseanews.com/index.php?s=news&d=comments&id=9969
Hidden Path did that defense grid game which is pretty fun and they 'contributed' to CS:S

At the last Lansmash I was at they had big long separate tables - one for CS:S players and one for everyone else.
I'm wouldn't disagree with your assessment, but think of it this way: CS:S exists as a handy way to lure and keep hyper competitive and aggressive dudes away from all the other games.
