The current mess of rumours around the internet suggest so, with Nintendo's Wii U being blamed as the catalyst for Sony potentially cutting their projected 10-year-long life-cycle for the PS3 with an all-new console.
According to a report on
DigiTimes, Taiwan-based partners ousted the new console, with Sony again teaming up with the likes of Foxconn and Pegatron Technology, both of whom worked on the PS3. It's also reported that the PS4 will have "body movement-based control like Kinect" and that production would begin "at the end of 2011 for launch in 2012". Of course, like so much rumour on the internet, take this with a massive grain of salt, and Sony have been adamant in the past they're sticking to the decade-long plan, but you never know in this business.
Stay tuned for more on this as it either develops, or diminishes.

Yes, but it won't be pin-compatible with mini-USB, and will use a different, incompatible wireless protocol.

I'm not a console gamer so dont know much about it, but if thats what Sony planned and is still planning then they are seriously holding technology advancement behind.
The PS3 is already dated and struggles to run any game in full HD, how can they hope to produce games for another 5 years on the same POS?

Most have yeah but if the new Rune Factory game is even half as good as it looks, it'll be kick ass. I may even rebuy a PS3 for it.

Out of all the current gen consoles, PS3 is probably the one with the most performance potential left to squeeze out of it, but they can't just think about what they're doing, they have to think about the competition.
MS had a pretty big first mover advantage with the X360 with a whole year to lay down a customer base before the more expensive PS3 shipped. I doubt Sony wants that to happen again.
I'd say that E3 2012 announcements from both Sony and MS are very possible at this point (with holiday '12 launches in US/Japan and a few months later for here and EU) and if that happens, it's going to make Wii-U seem pretty LOL.

There is no reason to upgrade, considering games dont push the consoles that hard...
Wait for 2013. Games to be on SD cards or similar.
