Good news for fans of military simulators; Arma 2: Free has been announced for release later this month. With the exception of HD graphics, user-made mod/add-on support and the campaign, Arma 2: Free boasts all of the features of Arma 2. Here’s what they had to say in the official press release.
“Create your own custom-built scenarios or deploy a massive selection of missions and game-modes made by others. No micro-transactions, no hidden costs, just the same epic terrain and huge variety of equipment! This is Arma 2 Free - virtual war without the training wheels. Arma 2: Free to download, free to play, free to share, free to host, free to create... free to play redefined!”
You can have a look at this announcement in trailer form below, as well.

" With the exception of HD graphics "
does that mean that the max res would be 800 x 600?

It would seem that it may have low rez textures and maybe also lower quality sounds. This is what they did with their two DLC's, they had a lite version of them that is included with an official patch, this way the community would not be split if some mods/missions have some DLC content. Those who have bought the DLC will have good looking units and better sounds, awesome way of doing things imo.

Obviously the aim here is to introduce the game to more people, those who end up liking what it has to offer will likely buy the game and associated expansions/DLC.
