The official Battlefield blog bears new details about "Back to Karkand", the DLC expansion that is controversially due to be released alongside the game as a pre-order incentive -- splintering the multiplayer maps available to players upon launch and requiring any latecomers and secondhand purchasers to buy it separately.
This themed multiplayer pack pays tribute to Battlefield fans by featuring four highly celebrated maps from Battlefield 2, including Strike at Karkand, Gulf of Oman and the Sharqi Peninsula, each now boldly re-mastered using Frostbite 2. Completing the package are classic Battlefield 2 weapons and vehicles, unique rewards, new achievements/trophies, and more. Containing four of the best Battlefield maps ever created by DICE, the first expansion pack for Battlefield 3 will be a treat both for returning fans and newcomers.
In addition to a detailed explanation of the first re-created map, Back to Karkand, the blog also features some new concept art, showing off an impression of what the map should look like in the incredibly impressive Frostbite 2 engine. A high-res version of this image can be found on our Battlefield 3 game page.

Battlefield 3 is due during holiday season 2011 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Sorry, shouldn't have posted that so hastily, it's clearly concept art and not an actual screenshot yet.

I may pre-order, but there is no way I'm paying for extra maps.

Why don't they reward players that own the previous versions of Battlefield where these 'classic' maps got their name.

if they were to bring back strike at karkand as per the original map that would kick ass but please no more wake island for the love of all that is good.

How's this any better than what Activision are doing with CoD and their DLCs.

Are they going to release a demo/beta?

The way ea are bloody pushing this game and even with still a couple of months before even i single final build trailer is released im starting to doubt whether this will be a game designed to kill cod or a game tht stays true to the old bf2 style of bf fans and i agree with winston tht the old bf players should get rewarded for staying with the franchise!!

@python- purchasing medal of honor gives a bf3 beta invite as a bonus, so yeh there will be a beta

DLC pay for maps suck balls. That is a massive negative for BF3. Still the good is winning, price region gouging I'm sure will happen and that will be a negative. It is starting to go in the 'I'm not buying this' basket. Anything else negative about it will tip the scales imo.

We shall see. I'm still waiting for NEW footage, rehashing the same scenes over and over and over and over again (or more?) doesn't bode well in my books.

I'll pre-order whenever it is available on steam.

Multiplayer DLCs should offer alternative cosmetic features only. If it's popular maps that all servers will be running, then it's forcing us to buy them anyway and then it becomes part of the cost of the base game as far as I'm concerned. It wouldn't be so bad if the base game was cheaper with paid DLCs.

I wish the DICE guys would remember why they got picked up in the first place.

Oh wait, that's right. A free mod for BF1942.

heh, agree! Wouldnt mind some Iwa Jima though. I really miss the BF1942 large open maps like El Alamein & Gazala.
